Wake Forest Powers Past Coastal Carolina, 8-4

The Demon Deacons plated six runs in the sixth to claim the midweek contest, marking the 13th time this season Wake Forest has scored at least five runs in a single inning.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --  In front of the largest midweek crowd since 2017, the Wake Forest baseball team used a six-run sixth inning to defeat Coastal Carolina, 8-4, Wednesday evening at David F. Couch Ballpark.

After the Chanticleers (13-10-1, 2-3-1 Sun Belt) took a one-run lead in the top of the fifth, the Demon Deacons (19-6, 4-5 ACC) exploded for six runs in the sixth inning to regain the lead for the remainder of the contest and even up the season series with the non-conference foe.

The six-run sixth marked the 13th time this season Wake Forest has scored at least five runs in a single inning and was spearheaded by three home runs and five hits.

Brendan Tinsman hit his team-best eighth home run of the season to tie the game at three before an RBI-single from Pierce Bennett broke the deadlock.

With runners on first and second, Danny Corona extended Wake Forest's lead to four with a three-run shot to left center field before Tommy Hawke hit his first collegiate home run to cap off the offensive eruption.

Tinsman led the Deacs at the plate with three hits, adding a single and double to his long fly. Adam Cecere and Hawke joined the redshirt junior with multi-hit performances.

Not to be outdone, nine Wake Forest arms combined to help an opponent to five runs or less for the 20th time this season, conceding just seven hits while striking out nine Chanticleer batters.

Reed Mascolo opened the ballgame with two scoreless innings, striking out three and walking zero batters while allowing just three hits in his fifth start of the season.

Brennen Oxford reeled in the first victory of his redshirt junior season, blanking Coastal Carolina in the top of the sixth with a strikeout and back-to-back fly outs in foul territory.

Eric Adler and Zach Grace closed out the game, holding the Chanticleers hitless over the final two innings. Adler fanned the first batter he faced before Grace retired the side in the top of the ninth, posting a pair of strikeouts for the final outs of the contest.

How It Happened

  • Reed Mascolo and the Demon Deacon defense forced a scoreless first inning as Mascolo fanned the opening batter of the game before Wake Forest turned an inning-ending double play.

  • Michael Turconi drew a walk with two outs in the bottom half, but a fly out ended the first full inning of game action.

  • Mascolo tossed another scoreless inning in the top of the second, highlighted by a pair of strikeouts.

    • After allowing a one-out double, Mascolo fanned his third batter of the game before inducing a ground out to Danny Corona at second base to end the Chanticleers' scoring threat.

  • Crawford Wade worked around a leadoff single to keep Coastal Carolina scoreless in the top of the third.

    • Wade struck out a Chanticleer batter with a runner on first for the opening out.

    • Coastal Carolina's base runner stole second to get into scoring position.

    • Wade fielded a grounder back to the mound and threw out the base runner to clear the bases before inducing another groundout to end the inning.

  • Wade induced the opening out of the top of the fourth with a fly out before Derek Crum took over as the lefty worked around a walk, retiring the next two Chanticleers with a strikeout and ground out.

  • Three-consecutive hits got Wake Forest on the board in the bottom of the fourth as the Deacs took a 2-0 lead.

    • Turconi scored the first run of the inning as the shortstop singled to lead off the frame and was scored on an RBI-double from Brendan Tinsman

    • The very next batter, Adam Cecere, scored Tinsman with an RBI-single to center field.

  • The Chanticleers took over the lead with three runs on two hits in the top of the fifth.

  • After the Deacs were retired in order in the bottom of the inning, Brennen Oxford kept Coastal Carolina off the scoreboard with a strikeout and back-to-back fly ball outs in foul territory.

    • Oxford fanned the first Chanticleer batter he faced before walking the next two batters. The left hander retired the next two batters with runners on second and third.

  • The Demon Deacon offense exploded for six runs in the sixth, regaining the lead (8-3) with five hits, highlighted by three home runs.

    • Tinsman got the scoring started with a solo shot to right field, the second-straight game the catcher has left the park.

    • A base hit up the middle from Pierce Bennett brought home Cecere (single) before Danny Corona blasted a home run to left center, scoring Jake Reinisch (walk) and Bennett.

    • Tommy Hawke capped off the big inning with the first collegiate home run of his career.

  • Coastal Carolina got one run back in the top of the seventh with a solo home run, cutting Wake Forest's lead to 8-4.

    • Seth Keener opened up the inning on the mound, inducing back-to-back groundouts.

    • After the Chanticleers' home run and a walk, Turconi made a leaping catch up the middle to end the inning.

  • Eric Adler tossed a zero in the eighth, working around a leadoff walk with a strikeout and back-to-back fly outs.

  • Zach Grace slammed the door in the top of the ninth, tossing a perfect 1-2-3 inning with a ground out and back-to-back strikeouts to clinch the midweek victory.

Words from Walter
"We didn't play particularly well today. We found a way to string together six runs in the sixth and we beat a really good Coastal Carolina team. Reed Mascolo did a nice job for us early but we were a bit flat afterwards. After an important series like we had last weekend, coming out flat sometimes happens. We will take the win tonight but we will need to be ready to go against a solid Boston College team this weekend."

On Deck
The Demon Deacons head up to Chestnut Hill, Mass. for their second road ACC series of the season, taking on Boston College on Friday, April 1 - Sunday, April 3 at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond.
