Wake Forest Defeats UNC Greensboro for Fifth-Straight Win

4/12/2022 11:17:00 PM | Baseball

The Demon Deacons used timely hitting to secure their 17th non-conference victory of the year and the season series sweep over the Spartans.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 23 Wake Forest baseball team won its fifth-straight game, defeating UNC Greensboro, 10-7, Tuesday at UNCG Baseball Stadium.

After defeating the Spartans, 23-3, on Feb. 22, the Demon Deacons (26-7, 9-6 ACC) claimed the season series over the UNC Greensboro (14-19, 0-3 SoCon) and their 17th non-conference victory of the season with timely hitting, compiling a .467 average (7-of-15) and seven RBIs with two outs.

Trailing 3-0, Wake Forest took hold of their first lead with a run in the second and three runs with two outs in the third thanks to a RBI-single from Michael Turconi and a two-run home run from Brendan Tinsman.

With the game tied after four innings, the Deacs plated three runs again in the fifth with an RBI-double from Brock Wilken and RBI-singles from Jake Reinisch and Pierce Bennett.

Danny Corona came up clutch in the top of the ninth with a two-out, two-RBI double to push Wake Forest's lead to four heading into the final half inning.

Seth Keener made his seventh start on the mound, throwing 3.2 innings and striking out a pair while allowing three earned runs.

Gabe Golob moved to 4-0 on the season as the Encino, Calif. native threw 1.2 innings, allowing one run.

Reed Mascolo forced the next five outs, highlighted by a pair of punchouts.

After inducing the final out in the seventh inning with a strikeout, Crawford Wade struck out two more in the eighth to preserve Wake Forest's four-run lead.

Zach Grace tallied a pop up and groundout for the first two outs of the ninth before Camden Minacci fanned a Spartan batter with a runner on first base to clinch the victory.

Wilken, Reinisch, Bennett and Corona all notched a team-high tying two hits while  Tinsman, Bennett and Corona all posted two RBIs to lead the Deacs.

Tinsman's home run in the third marked his team-best 12th round tripper of his redshirt junior season. The Cape Elizabeth, Maine native has now homered in each of Wake Forest's last three games.

Wilken and Kurtz both notched their 10th double of the season, tying for a team-best.

With his RBI-single in the fifth, Reinisch hsa now driven in at least one run in fourth-straight games.

How It Happened

  • The Spartans took a 3-0 lead after the bottom of the first with four hits and one error.

    • Seth Keener struck out a batter for the second out of the game.

    • With a runner on third, Keener induced an inning-ending fly out to Tommy Hawke in center field.

  • The Deacs got on the board with an RBI-double from Pierce Bennett, trimming UNC Greensboro's lead to 3-1.

    • Brendan Tinsman (walk) and Adam Cecere (hit by pitch) reached base to open the inning.

    • Bennett's base hit scored Tinsman, while Cecere was called out trying to score from first.

  • A 5-4-3 double play ended a scoreless second from Keener on the mound.

    • The righthander worked around a one-out walk after inducing a groundout to the first Spartan batter of the inning.

  • Wake Forest overtook the lead (4-3) with three runs in the top of the third. An RBI-single from Michael Turconi scored Hawke to open the scoring before Brendan Tinsman launched a two-run home run to left center field.

    • Tinsman's long fly scored Turconi.

  • Keener tossed another zero in the bottom of the third, forcing two ground outs and a foul out to Bennett in foul territory.

  • Wake Forest got a two-out base runner as Danny Corona laid a bunt down the first base line. A ground out ended the top of the fourth.

  • The Spartans tied the game at four with an RBI-triple with one out. Keener forced a groundout to the very next batter before Gabe Golob induced an inning-ending fly out to strand the UNC Greensboro runner at third.

  • Wake Forest broke the tie in the top of the fifth as the Deacs responded with three more runs with a Brock Wilken RBI-double and RBI-singles from Jake Reinisch and Bennett.

    • Nick Kurtz leadoff the inning with a ground-rule double and was scored on Wilken's two-bagger.

  • The Spartans got one run back in the bottom of the fifth, cutting Wake Forest's lead to 7-5.

    • With runners on first and third, Brendan Tinsman caught a Spartan trying to steal second to end the inning.

  • The Deacs got that run back in the top of the sixth, pushing their lead back to three (8-5) as Hawke scored on a double play with the bases loaded.

    • Hawke singled to leadoff the inning before Kurtz and Wilken both walked to lead the bases.

  • Mascolo retired the Spartans in order in the bottom half of the frame, fanning the first two batters he faced.

  • Reinisch tallied his second base hit of the night with two outs in the top of the seventh, but a double play ended the inning.

  • UNC Greensboro tacked on one run in the bottom half of the inning off one hit and one error.

    • A Spartan was plated on the second out of the inning as Mascolo induced back-to-back groundouts.

    • Crawford Wade stranded a runner on second with a strikeout to the only batter he faced.

  • Wake Forest stranded a pair in the top of the eighth as Kurtz walked and Wilken tallied a single to right field with two outs. A strikeout ended the scoring opportunity.

  • Crawford Wade returned to the mound in the bottom half of the inning and tossed a three-up, three-down inning with a pair of strikeouts.

  • Corona came up clutch with a two-out, two-RBI double in the ninth, extending Wake Forest's lead to 10-6.

    • Tinsman, who reached on an error, and Cecere, who doubled to right field, scored on Corona's two-bagger.

  • Zach Grace induced the first two outs of the ninth with a pop up and groundout. Camden Minacci took over with two outs after a UNC Greensboro run and struck out the only batter he faced to clinch the midweek victory.

Words from Walter
"It was a great win on the road against a good ball club. This is a tough place to win and we've struggled to win here in years past. It's a really good win for us. Two-out RBIs were really the story today. We had situations with runners on second base and nobody out and we couldn't push them around. Turc has the two-out RBI, Tinny homers right behind that so three of those come with two outs. Jake Reinisch singles to right field with two outs and then Pierce Bennett singles behind him so two more with two outs. Obviously, Danny Corona there in the ninth was huge. It saved Cam's pitches. Cam only threw four pitches. If he starts that inning, who knows how many pitches he throws. Really good to save Cam's bullets there.

Seth was a little bit shaky there in the first but he settled down and threw well. Everybody that came in behind him threw the ball really well. Other than the free passes and some of those things that led to runs, we threw the ball well today. Good team win. Nice day off that we need tomorrow and then practice Thursday to get ready for Clemson."
