Wake Forest Falls in Finale at No. 13 Notre Dame

4/24/2022 3:36:00 PM | Baseball

Jake Reinisch extended his on-base streak to 39 games while tallying a career-high four RBIs. Michael Turconi launched his eighth home run of the season and drove in Wake Forest’s first three runs.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Wake Forest baseball team fell, 13-12, in the series finale against No. 13 Notre Dame at Frank Eck Stadium

Michael Turconi drove in the Demon Deacons' (28-12, 10-11 ACC) first three runs with a two-run home run to right field in the top of the first and an RBI-single in the top of the third, giving Wake Forest a 3-0 lead.

The Fighting Irish (26-8, 11-7 ACC) plated their first runs of the game to cut the Demon Deacon lead to one in the fourth. Undaunted, Wake Forest tallied five runs in the next half frame, their 18th inning of at least five runs this season, to increase their lead to 8-2.

Brendan Tinsman got the scoring started in the big inning with an RBI-single before Jake Reinisch and Chris Katz notched consecutive walks with the bases loaded to push across two runs. Danny Corona rounded out the scoring with a two-RBI single, his seventh career game with multiple runs driven in.

Wake Forest pushed their lead back to four thanks to a Reinisch three-run blast over the right field wall in immediate response to Notre Dame's five runs in the bottom of the fifth.

After a Demon Deacon run in the top of the seventh, the Irish tied the game with four runs in the bottom of the inning.

After a scoreless eighth inning from both sides, Notre Dame notched an RBI-single to claim the series finale.

Turconi led Wake Forest at the plate with his fourth three-hit performance of the 2022 season. Reinisch posted a team and career-high four RBIs while extending his on-base streak to 39 games.

Teddy McGraw opened his eighth start on the mound with three-straight scoreless innings. Overall, McGraw tossed 4.2 innings with four strikeouts.

Gabe Golob, Crawford Wade and Camden Minacci all made relief appearances out of the bullpen.

How It Happened

  • Wake Forest jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Michael Turconi launched a two-run homer to right center field. Brock Wilken was scored on Turconi's long fly as the third baseman walked.

  • Teddy McGraw got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the first, punching out his first batter of the game before inducing a fly out to center field to preserve Wake Forest's two-run lead (2-0).

  • After the Deacs were retired in order to open the second, McGraw tossed his second-straight zero with a hitless bottom of the frame.

    • The Fighting Irish put a runner on second with a walk and stolen base. McGraw retired the next three batters to strand him.

    • A groundout to first pushed the base runner to third. McGraw fielded a grounder back to the mound and caused a run down as the Notre Dame's base runner broke home. McGraw flipped the ball to Wilken before Brendan Tinsman tagged him out.

    • A groundout ended the inning as the Deacs continued to lead 2-0.

  • Turconi continued to produce in the top of the third, pushing home Kyle Joye with an RBI-single up the middle as Wake Forest increased their lead to 3-0.

    • Joye opened up the inning with a leadoff single to center and moved to second as Tommy Hawke reached base after getting hit by a pitch.

    • Joye then advanced to third on a wild pitch before being plated on Turconi's third RBI of the game.

  • McGraw made quick work of the Irish in the bottom half of the inning, retiring Notre Dame in order with a ground out, fly out and strikeout.

  • Adam Cecere and Jake Reinisch tallied base hits in the top of the fourth, but a couple strikeouts stranded the pair.

    • Reinisch's single to right field extended his on-base streak to 39 games.

  • Notre Dame cut Wake Forest's lead to one (3-2) with a two-run triple with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. McGraw induced a fly out to end the inning.

    • McGraw forced a ground out to the leadoff batter before fanning a Notre Dame batter for the second out, his third punchout of the game.

  • Wake Forest's offense exploded for five runs in the top of the fifth inning. Their 18th inning this season with at least five runs pushed their lead to 8-2.

    • Brendan Tinsman got the scoring started with an RBI-single to center field, scoring Hawke (leadoff single).

    • The Deacs loaded the bases as Pierce Bennett walked to push Tinsman to second. Back-to-back bases-loaded walks to Reinisch and Katz pushed the Demon Deacon lead to 6-2.

    • Danny Corona tallied a pinch hit, two-RBI single to left center field to score Reinisch and Bennett, capping off the scoring.

  • Notre Dame responded with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, cutting Wake Forest's lead to 8-7.

    • McGraw fanned his fourth batter of the game for the opening out.

    • Gabe Golob forced an inning-ending fly out to Bennett in right field.

  • The Deacs got three runs back as Reinisch powered a ball over the right field wall, scoring Adam Cecere (walk) and Tinsman (fielder's choice) as Wake Forest regained a four-run lead.

  • A Notre Dame solo home run trimmed the Deacon lead to 11-8 after six full innings. Wake Forest got that run back and pushed their lead back to four (12-8) as Corona scored on a double play groundout.

    • After the Fighting Irish home run in the top of the frame, Golob struck out a batter and induced a fly out to strand a base runner at third.

  • Notre Dame tied the game at 12 with a sacrifice fly and three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh.

  • Tinsman walked to lead off the top of the eighth, Wake Forest's ninth free pass of the game. The next three batters were retired to end the inning. Camden Minacci tossed a scoreless bottom half of the inning as the game remained tied heading into the ninth.

  • Notre Dame claimed the series finale, 13-12, in the bottom of ninth with an RBI-single to center field.
