Demon Deacons Fall in Finale at Boston College

4/3/2022 4:00:00 PM | Baseball

Wake Forest won their second ACC series of the season with victories in game one and two in Chestnut Hill before falling in the final game of the series on Sunday.

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Wake Forest baseball team fell, 7-6, in the series finale at Boston College Sunday afternoon at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond.

After claiming their second ACC series victory of the 2022 season with wins on Friday and Saturday, the Demon Deacons (21-7, 6-6 ACC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the first inning with an RBI-single from Michael Turconi and a two-RBI triple from Adam Cecere

The Eagles (12-16, 2-10 ACC) responded with a run of their own before Wake Forest increased their lead to 5-1 as Tommy Hawke tagged up on a short pop out in center field and Brendan Tinsman tallied an RBI-single.

The Demon Deacons responded to Boston College's four-run fourth inning with a run of their own to tie the game at 6-6 in the middle of the fifth before a solo home run ultimately clinched the series finale for the Eagles in the seventh.

Teddy McGraw made his fifth start of the season, tossing three innings with four strikeouts.

Crawford Wade gave the Demon Deacons two scoreless frames as the left hander kept Boston College off the scoreboard in the fourth and fifth innings. Wade punched out two while walking just one batter.

Eric Adler threw two innings for the first time since Feb. 26, striking out a batter while allowing one run.

Camden Minacci struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth. The Tampa, Fla. native has now struck out 34 batters in 21.2 innings this season.

Turconi, Cecere and Nick Kurtz led Wake Forest at the plate with two hits apiece. Turconi and Cecere also posted a team-high tying two RBIs.

How It Happened

  • Wake Forest used a leadoff double, an RBI-single and a two-RBI triple to jump out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the first.

    • Nick Kurtz lead off the game with a two-bagger before advancing to third on a wild pitch,

    • The Deacs put runners on the corners as Brock Wilken was walked.

    • Michael Turconi continued to swing the bat well, tallying his eighth hit of the series to score Kurtz.

    • Wilken and Turconi were plated on a two-RBI triple from Adam Cecere with one out.

  • Boston College pushed across one run in the bottom half of the inning. Teddy McGraw tallied strikeouts for the first and third outs of the frame.

    • A fielder's choice with the bases loaded pushed across the Eagles' run as McGraw kept Boston College in the frame.

  • The Deacs pushed across two runs in the top of the second, increasing their lead to 5-1.

    • Tommy Hawke and Kurtz walked to open the frame. Hawke tagged up to third on the first out of the inning before tagging again on a pop up to the shortstop in shallow center field.

    •  With Kurtz on third, Brendan Tinsman lasered an RBI-single through the right side to give Wake Forest a four-run lead.

  • The Eagles tacked on another run in the bottom of the second, trimming the Demon Deacon lead to 5-2.

    • McGraw punched out the first and last batter he faced for the second-straight inning.

    • Boston College plated their second run of the game with a walk, stolen base and RBI-single.

  • Both teams remained off the scoreboard in the third inning as Wake Forest held onto their three-run lead (5-2).

    • McGraw forced a fielder's choice for the first out of the inning. The Eagles placed runners on first and second with a single to left field. McGraw retired two-straight batters to end the inning.

  • Turconi laid down a perfect bunt for his ninth hit of the series in the top of fourth with two outs. Turconi advanced to second on a wild pitch, but a ground out to short ended the inning.

  • Boston College took hold of a 6-5 lead after four full innings.

    • Crawford Wade induced all three outs in the inning with a ground out, fly out and strike out.

  • Wake Forest responded in the next half inning as Cecere (leadoff double) was brought home by Danny Corona (RBI-single) with two outs to tie the game at six.

  • Wade retired the Eagles in order with a strikeout, fly out and pop up for a shutdown inning in the bottom of the fifth.

  • With a runner on first, Eric Adler took over on the mound and proceeded to retire the next three Boston College batters with back-to-back fly outs and a ground out as the game remained tied at six.

  • Reinisch (single) and Bennett (walk) reached base safely with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, but a strikeout stranded the pair.

  • A leadoff solo home run to left field gave Boston College a one-run lead (7-6) through seven full innings.

  • The Deacs were unable to capitalize on a pair of base runners with no one out as Boston College took their one-run lead into the bottom of the eighth.

  • Camden Minacci hit the mound for the next half inning as the right hander struck out the side.

  • The Eagles took the series finale, 7-6, after retiring the Deacs in order in the top of the ninth.

Words from Walter
"It was a really disappointing day. We jumped out to a 3-0 lead. We gave away a run in the first. We scored two more to make it 5-1 and then we gave away another run in the second and just kind of gave them life. We had eight free passes on the day. For the second day in a row, they had more runs than hits. Just a really disappointing day all around.

"We did a really good job offensively in the first two innings and then after that, we didn't have enough quality at-bats. Winning two out of three on the weekend is always a good thing, no matter who you're playing or where you're playing. We've got to get ready for Elon on Tuesday."

On Deck
Wake Forest returns to the road for a midweek matchup against Elon on Tuesday, April 5 at 6 p.m.

The second game of the home-and-home non-conference series will be available on FloSports.
