The Demon Deacons season was highlighted by five tournament wins including their second ACC Championship in the last four years.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – After a historic season that included the program's seventh ACC Championship title, the No. 4 ranked Wake Forest women's golf team's run came to an end Sunday night at the NCAA Championship in Scottsdale, Ariz.
After starting the day below the cutline, the Demon Deacons battled throughout the third round including inspiring performances from the top of the lineup. Despite the performance on the last day, Wake Forest lost out on the final spot in Monday's field, losing in a team playoff against No. 3 South Carolina for the No. 15 spot on the leaderboard.
Both teams were tied at 39-over-par for the tournament and in the playoff the Demon Deacons fell by just one stroke to the Gamecocks.
ACC Freshman of the Year Carolina Chacarra turned in the low round for the Deacs on Sunday, posting a 73 (+1), which was tied for the lowest round of the week for the team. Chacarra, who was a two-time winner this season at the UCF Challenge and the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, hit the turn at even par after birdieing the par-5 18th hole. She once again got back to level when she found another birdie on the par-5 4th.
In addition to being the ACC Freshman of the Year, Chacarra is also a finalist for the ANNIKA Award, given to the top women's collegiate golfer in the nation and will represent the international team at the upcoming Arnold Palmer Cup this summer.
Sophomore Lauren Walsh, who was selected to represent represent Team GBI at the Curtis Cup in June and who earned All-ACC recognition this season, posted a final round 74 (+2) Sunday afternoon. It was her best round of the week, cutting four strokes off her score from the second round.
Junior and reigning ACC Player of the Year Rachel Kuehn also turned in her best round of the week at Greyhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. Kuehn, who had a pair of birdies on the day, rose up the leaderboard with the help of her 75 (+3).
Kuehn, who captured individual titles at both the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invite and at the Northrup Grumman Regional Challenge, recently made her LPGA Tour debut at the Palos Verdes Championship and still has plenty of prestigious events still left on her calendar this year.
She is set to compete at the Arnold Palmer Cup for the second consecutive year while also representing Team USA at the Curtis Cup this summer.
This is the fourth consecutive season the Demon Deacons have qualified for the NCAA Championships. Additionally, Wake Forest claimed five team titles this season including setting a then NCAA Record 45-under-par score at the UCF Challenge in February.
Coach's Comments
"Obviously, it is disappointing to not have won a championship. It is what we work for all year. These wonderful student-athletes had a tremendous year, winning five tournaments including the ACC Championship. So, we leave here disappointed, but we are grateful for an outstanding year. We look forward to coming here again next year and hopefully taking a championship." – head coach Kim Lewellen
