Last season, the nationally-ranked Demon Deacons captured the tournament by a program-record and tournament-record score while Michael Brennan shared individual honors with Alex Fitzpatrick.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The nationally-ranked Wake Forest men's golf team is set to defend its Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational title this week from Monday, Sept. 26 to Tuesday, Sept. 27 at Old Town Club.
The reigning ACC Champions and NCAA Regional Champions also claimed the 2021 Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational, winning by 14 strokes with a program-record score of 805 and breaking the previous record by six strokes.
Under the direction of longtime Wake Forest head coach Jerry Haas, the Deacs had a historic season in 2021-22. The Demon Deacons won their first ACC Championship since 1989 last season and set a program record at the 2022 NCAA New Haven Regional, shooting 26-under-par and winning the regional by seven strokes. They were led on the course by PING Second-Team All-American Michael Brennan and All-ACC performer Alex Fitzpatrick.
In the 2021 Old Town Club Collegiate, the Deacs ran away with the team title after shooting 273 (-7) and capped off a tournament record 35-under-par performance, breaking the tournament record by five strokes.
After a record-setting opening round that tied Brennan (62, -8) for the second lowest round in school history. Brennan along with Fitzpatrick took a share of the lead heading into the final day at nine-under-par.
Both players traded the lead throughout the day and ended up both carding final rounds of 67 (-3) to share the title. This marks the third tournament title for Brennan and second for Fitzpatrick in their Wake Forest careers.
Their three-round totals of 198 are both tied for seventh in program history for a three-round event.
In total six Demon Deacons ended up with top 25 finishes behind Fitzpatrick and Brennan. Scotty Kennon grabbed his first career top-10 finish with a 54-hole score of 204 (-6). Marshall Meisel joined him in the top 15, tying for 14th at 5-under-par for the tournament.
Tomorrow's first round is scheduled for a 8:25 a.m. (ET) start as Wake Forest tees off hole one. The Demon Deacons will be paired with College of Charleston and Georgia Southern on the opening day of play.
Additionally, the Demon Deacons will compete with a second team that will tee off at 7:30 a.m. off hole one with Cincinnati and Davidson.
THE DEACS' LINEUP
Brennan, who has now risen to No. 15 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, made his PGA Tour debut at the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club in February. That Monday, he earned a spot in the field as the only amateur, setting a Collegiate Showcase record Monday, shooting a five-under-par 66. He will look to claim potentially his fifth individual title, trying to join elite company in Wake Forest history. He was named a watch list member for the Fred Haskins Award to start the season.
Owens makes his collegiate debut in the lineup for the Demon Deacons. As a junior, he ranked as high as No. 9 nationally in the AJGA standings. In March, he qualified for the Chitimacha Louisiana Open presented on the Korn Ferry Tour as a Monday qualifier. Additionally, he reached the Round of 32 at the 2022 North and South Amateur Championship and is the reigning LHSAA Individual Champion.
Owens, who recorded the lowest debut round in program history, finished as the Deacs top player in the Maui Jim Intercollegiate, tying for 13th individually.
Meisel competed in five events including a pair of events in the lineup, playing in the lineup at the Colonial Collegiate and the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate. He finished tied for 16th in Georgia while also placing in the top 25 four times during the season with his highest finish coming at the Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational where he placed 14th at 5-under-par.
He finished tied for 30th in the opening event of the 2022-23 season in Arizona.
Kennon had an impressive showing at the 2021 Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational. He was par or below in all three rounds of the tournament, finishing the week tied for ninth and nine-under par, the first career top-10 finish. Kennon picked up his second top-10 finish of the season at the Valspar Collegiate with the help of his best round of his young career. He finished eighth, firing a final round 64 (-7), moving up 20 spots on the final day of competition.
The freshman was one of one of three Demon Deacons to be sub par for all three rounds at the 2022 NCAA Regionals, recording a 68-69-69 to place tied for ninth on the individual leaderboard at 4-under-par.
In his collegiate debut at the Maui Jim Individual, McLauchlan finished tied for sixth on the leaderboard. He was helped by turning in a debut round of 64 (-8) that was bogey free and included six birdies and an eagle on the par-5 ninth. He was tied for the lead after the opening round.
Before coming to Wake Forest, he participated in the 2022 U.S. Amateur at Ridgewood Country Club, Paramus, N.J and is also the reigning Jones Cup Junior Invitational champion.
