10/31/2023 5:52:00 PM | Field Hockey

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Wake Forest field hockey team concluded the 2023 season, falling 2-0 to No. 2 Duke on Tuesday afternoon at Turf Field on the campus of the University of Virginia.

Goalkeeper Ellie Todd saved a season-high 10 shots in the final match of her sophomore season. The Boston, Mass. native finished the year with 73 saves, and currently leads the ACC. Todd stopped five or more shots in nine matches this season for Wake Forest (8-9, 1-5 ACC).

Duke (15-3, 5-1 ACC) scored both of their goals off of penalty corner opportunities, creating nine corners while holding the Demon Deacons to just one in the match. Wake Forest was limited to just four shots in the match with two on goal.

How It Happened
  • Duke struck first on their third corner of the opening 15 minutes of play with a goal from Josephine Palde.
  • Anna Gwiazdzinski took the Deacs first shot 5:03 into the first quarter as Wake Forest looked to answer back.
  • Todd faced five shots in the first quarter, coming away with four saves.
  • McCusker nearly equalized with a shot from the top of the circle that forced the Duke keeper into action with 10 minutes left in the second quarter.
  • Charlie van Oirschot extended the Blue Devil advantage off of Duke's sixth corner of the afternoon.
  • Wake was unable to generate a penalty corner in the first half while surrendering eight to the Blue Devils, who scored both their first half goals off of corners.
  • The Demon Deacons created their first corner with 2:34 left in the third quarter.
    • Gwiazdzinski inserted for Wake, creating a shot for Nat Friedman, who sent the ball wide of the cage.
  • Grace Delmotte ripped a shot wide with just under five minutes left in the contest as Wake Forest looked to erase the two-goal deficit.
  • Duke outshot Wake 17-4 and kept the Deacs to just one shot in each quarter to secure the win.

Quotables
"Unfortunately, we were on the back foot and Duke had a lot to do with that. They kept us out of sync and made us far more reactionary and not proactive generating any attack. It was just an unfortunate and fragmented game. I want to be mindful of the accomplishments we had this season and give credit to a world-class senior group of young women who certainly left their mark on Wake Forest field hockey." - head coach Jen Averill

2023 Season Highlights
  • Nat Friedman received All-ACC honors for the fourth-straight season as the Towson, Md. native appeared and started in all 17 matches in 2023. The First Team nod is the first of Friedman's career, having previously been named Second Team in the past three seasons by the league.
  • Senior midfielder Grace Delmotte was named to the All-ACC Second Team for the third time in her career and second-straight season, appearing in all 17 matches and starting 16 in 2023.
  • The Wake Forest field hockey team was ranked as high as No. 16 in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll. Since the poll's inception in 2018, Wake Forest has appeared in 55 of the 61 weekly polls.
  • The Deacs defeated two top-10 teams during the regular season, with an early season 1-0 win against then No. 4 Michigan in the ACC/Big 10 Challenge and a 2-1 win in the ACC regular season finale against No. 10 Syracuse.
  • Wake finished nonconference action with four-straight victories with all four wins coming away from Kentner Stadium and outscored opponents 11-1 over the stretch.
  • Wake Forest was the ACC leader in shutouts with seven during the regular season, holding opponents scoreless in nearly 50-percent of matches this season. On five different occasions, the Demon Deacons back line kept an opponent under five shots in a match.
  • Ellie Todd led all ACC goalkeepers with a 3.94 saves per game average during the regular season while her 63 total saves were good for second among league keepers.
  • Freshman Faye Janse made an immediate impact for the Demon Deacons, finishing tied for second on the squad with seven points. Janse found the back of the cage on two occasions, while dishing out three assists in her first season.
  • Brooke McCusker caught fire towards the end of the 2023 regular season with a streak of four goals in six games, including back-to-back games with a goal against Longwood and Boston College. McCusker led the Deacs with four goals and eight points this season and set a new season high, having previously scored three goals in her freshman season and two in her sophomore year.
  • Having yet to score prior to the contest, sophomore Amelia Frey broke through in a big way as she became the first Demon Deacon to net three goals in a game since Hannah Maxwell against Boston College on Oct. 10, 2022 in the Deacs win over Colgate.
  • A number of Deacs found the back of the cage this season as seven players have scored multiple goals: Brooke McCusker (4), Amelia Frey (3), Faye Janse (2), Mia Shoenbeck (2), Nat Friedman (2) Anna Gwiazdzinski (2) and Ava Moore (2).
