Wake Forest Drops Defensive Battle to North Carolina A&T

11/15/2023 9:12:00 PM | Women's Basketball

The Demon Deacons will now travel to Laie, Hawaii for the North Shore Showcase.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's basketball team dropped a 56-51 decision to in-state foe North Carolina A&T Wednesday evening at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The loss marked the Demon Deacons' (1-2) first home defeat of the season. The Aggies improved to 2-1 on the season.

Defensively, the Demon Deacons held the Aggies to just nine points in the first quarter (3-of-16 FG). It marked the first time this season Wake Forest held an opponent to a single-digit quarter. Additionally, North Carolina A&T's 25 points in the first half was its fewest in a half this season.

Wake Forest forced 20 turnovers Wednesday night, the most they have forced in a game since the home meeting with Clemson on Feb. 5, 2023. It also marked the most turnovers forced against a non-conference opponent since High Point last December.

Individually, the Deacs were led by junior forward Alyssa Andrews who tallied a season-high 12 points, along with five boards. Of note, her 12 points are the most she's scored in a game since March 17, 2022 against Akron in the NIT.

Graduate guard Kaia Harrison went 5-of-6 from the line and is now 13-of-14 (.929) for the season. Of note, she finished the game with 10 points, two assists and a rebound. She has tallied double-figure points in all three games this season and now ranks second on the team in scoring with 11.0 points per game this season.

From Gebbia
"We need to find a way to get locked in earlier in the game, especially on the offensive end of the floor. We did some good things defensively and held them down for the most part. Alyssa was a bright spot for us in the first half and really provided a spark off the bench. Madisyn also played well. It may not fully show up on the stat sheet but she did a lot of really good things. We needed to do a better job on the glass and boxing out. Also our shot selection needs to be better and we need to not just settle for threes especially early in the shot clock. This one is on all of us and that starts with me and getting them ready. We have two tough teams ahead of us out in Hawaii and it gives us a good opportunity to earn good wins if we can learn from this one and correct what we did tonight." - Coach Megan Gebbia
