
Wake Forest Falls at Virginia Tech During Penultimate Regular-Season Test

Ashley Slater reached a new season high on Sunday afternoon.
BLACKSBURG, Va. – On the road one final time for the 2023 regular season, Wake Forest volleyball (17-11, 8-9) visited Virginia Tech (13-14, 3-13) on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 19). The Demon Deacons were able to capture the first set, but ultimately suffered a 3-1 defeat in Blacksburg.
Wake Forest split its regular-season series versus the Hokies, 1-1.
Senior hitter Ashley Slater impressed with an efficient, season-high mark of 15 kills on a .480 hitting percentage. Her classmate Olivia Franke chipped in 11 kills and a .320 attacking clip.
Freshman hitter Ava Carney was a two-way standout, finishing with 14 kills and seven digs.
Sunday was the 13th time this season in which Wake Forest had three or more of its own register double figures in kills.
For the fourth match in a row, sophomore setter Rian Baker recorded over 40 assists. The Rolling Meadows, Illinois, native tossed out 43 for the day, including eight digs.
Defensively, Emma Farrell and Ava Torrance each totaled 10 digs.

"Tough weekend," said head coach Randi Smart. "These ones on the road in the ACC will always test you, regardless of the opponent. This late in the season, we just have to continue to do everything as a whole and keep bodies as healthy as possible. We have appreciated the support all year long and are looking forward to playing one final one of the regular season in our gym on Wednesday in front of our fans."

- By the first break of the contest, the Deacs led 15-10.
- A 6-2 Deacon run next took place, with Emmy Ogogor chipping into the scoring column.
- After suffering an attack error, Virginia Tech called for a timeout, down 22-13 in the first.
