ATLANTA, Ga. – In its first ACC match of the 2023 campaign, the 25th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team earned a 6-1 decision over No. 69 Georgia Tech Friday evening inside the Ken Byers Tennis Complex in Atlanta, Ga.

With the victory, the Demon Deacons (14-5, 1-0 ACC) improved to 12-1 in ACC action over the past two seasons after going 11-1 in league play a year ago. Additionally, Friday's win improved the Deacs to a stellar 6-1 in their last seven ACC road matches, dating back to last season.

Wake Forest had another solid showing in doubles action Friday as the Deacs secured the doubles point behind victories in the first and third slots. Of note, No. 40 Filippo Moroni/Juan Lopez de Azcona earned an impressive victory over No. 21 Andres Martin/Marcus McDaniel in first doubles.

Up 1-0 early, the Demon Deacons went a stellar 5-1 in singles play with victories in first, second, fourth, fifth and sixth singles. The only court in which the Deacs dropped was third singles, due to retirement.

With Friday's result, Wake Forest is now 4-4 against ranked opponents to start the 2023 season. Additionally, with No. 37 Melios Efstathiou's win on court one, the Demon Deacons improved to 14-2 in first singles this season.

How It Happened

Wake Forest got off to an excellent start in doubles play as the Deacs held the lead on two courts in the early going.
Despite leading on 2-of-3 courts, the Demon Deacons quickly faced a 1-0 deficit in doubles action as Keshav Chopra/Rohan Sachdev of Georgia Tech downed Jurabek Karimov/Luciano Tacchi, 6-1.
After jumping out to a 5-2 lead through seven games, No. 40 Filippo Moroni/Juan Lopez de Azcona (WFU) held on to defeat No. 21 Andres Martin/Marcus McDaniel (GT) 6-3 in first doubles.
- The victory marked Moroni/Lopez de Azcona's highest ranked victory of the 2023 campaign.
  - The pair earned their sixth duals doubles win of the season with the result.
The Demon Deacons secured the doubles point as Melios Efstathiou/Matthew Thomson beat Brandon McKinney/Elias Shokry, 6-3, in third doubles.
Wake Forest took a 1-0 advantage into singles play.
The Deacs came out strong in singles, leading on each court through five games.
- The Demon Deacons' momentum was seized as a result of a brief power outage, causing a delay in action.
After the intermission, Georgia Tech stormed back to make each singles match competitive.
Undaunted, Wake Forest took a 2-0 lead as Moroni earned a 6-1, 6-3 decision over No. 47 McDaniel.
The Deacs extended their lead to 3-0 as Tacchi defeated Sachdev 6-0, 6-2 in fourth singles.
- Tacchi improved to 9-5 in duals singles action this season with the win.
Lopez de Azcona clinched the victory for Wake Forest with a 6-4, 6-3 win in sixth singles.
Although the Demon Deacons clinched the victory with Lopez de Azcona's decision, the two sides decided to play out the remainder of the contest.
Efstathiou and Thomson both notched victories on their respective courts, giving Wake Forest six total points.
- Efstathiou earned an impressive 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win on court one over No. 34 Martin.
- Of note, the only singles match Wake Forest dropped Friday was third singles due to retirement.
The Deacs defeated the Yellow Jackets, 6-1, marking their first conference win of the 2023 season.

Coming into the match, we were uncertain whether we were playing indoors or outdoors, but we responded well and played a good match. We got the doubles point, which was huge heading into singles.
