Borna Gojo Primed for Round of 16 US Open Matchup with Novak Djokovic

Gojo is seeking his first-ever Grand Slam title.

FLUSHING, N.Y. – After securing his sixth-consecutive victory Friday evening, Wake Forest legend Borna Gojo will square off with No.2-ranked Novak Djoković in the Round of 16 at the 2023 US Open Tennis Championships at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing, N.Y.
 
Sunday's match can be streamed on ESPN, and the time is to be determined.
 
"We're all excited for Borna [Gojo] as he gets to play the greatest player of all time, on the biggest stage, on the biggest court tomorrow," said head coach Tony Bresky. "He has gotten better and better as a professional. He's improved consistently, and it's been great to see the confidence he's gained. We'll all be cheering for him tomorrow."

The Matchup
  • Gojo has won six-consecutive matches en route to Sunday's contest, including three in the qualifying rounds.
  • The Split, Croatia native has reeled off three-consecutive main draw victories, including wins over Hugo Dellien in the first round and home favorite Mackenzie McDonald in the second.
    • Of note, Gojo has not dropped serve in each of his three main-draw matches.
  • In his victory over Jiří Veselý Friday, Gojo won 91 percent (48/53) of the points behind his first serve. Additionally, he won 60 percent (9/15) of points on his second serve, while blasting an impressive 12 aces without committing any double fault.
  • In six hard-court tournaments this year, Gojo has a record of 10-5.
    • Gojo is 107-for-126 in service games on hard courts (84.9 percent).
      • Additionally, he is 141st in break point win percentage on hard courts (37.6 percent) after going 32-for-85.
  • Considered arguably the greatest tennis player of all time, Djoković is seeking his record 24th Grand Slam title.
    • The Serbia native has accumulated a stellar 357-career wins in Grand Slam matches.
  • Djoković is coming off a win over No. 38-ranked Laslo Djere in the Round of 32 on Friday.
  • He won the Western & Southern Open in his last tournament, taking down No. 1-ranked Carlos Alcaraz (5-7, 7-6, 7-6) in the final.
  • Djoković has won three tournaments on hard courts this year, posting a 20-1 record on that surface.
    • In terms of serve/return winning percentages on hard courts, Djoković has won 90 percent of his games on serve, and 33.1 percent on return.
  • Djoković has converted 74 of 182 break points on hard courts (40.7 percent), and is 89th in break points won.

Gojo's Wake Forest Career Accolades
Gojo enjoyed a decorated career at Wake Forest from 2017-19, helping the Deacons to their first ever NCAA Championship in 2018. The Split, Croatia native, was named First-Team All-ACC all three years and was a three-time NCAA Singles All-American. He finished his junior season with a 13-4 singles record as 11 of his 13 wins came against ranked opponents. Of note, each of his 17 matches came at the No. 1 singles position.
 
"Borna [Gojo] was an unbelievable recruit coming into Wake Forest," said Bresky. "He came in as an 18 year old and made an immediate impact on the program. Along with Petros Chrysochos, he helped us earn our first-ever No. 1 ranking and lead us to the national title in 2018. His impact helped propel us as a program, and he's a big catalyst in what we've been able to build today."
