No. 17 Wake Forest Downs No. 20 Florida; Advances to ITA Kickoff Weekend Championship

The Demon Deacons will face Illinois on Sunday at 2 p.m.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The 17th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team defeated No. 20 Florida, 4-1, in the ITA Kickoff Weekend opener Saturday morning at the Chewning Tennis Center in Chapel Hill.
 
With the victory, the Demon Deacons (3-1, 0-0 ACC) advanced to the championship match of the North Carolina Regional.
 
Saturday's win over No. 20 Florida snapped a four-match losing skid against the Gators and marked the Demon Deacons' first win over Florida since 2001.
 
Individually, graduate student Holden Koons and freshman Luca Pow both earned ranked wins over No. 69 Tanapatt Nirundorn and No. 86 JanMangus Johnson, respectively. Of note, the victories marked both Koons' and Pow's first ranked dual singles wins of the 2024 campaign.
 
Saturday, the Demon Deacons got off to a strong start in doubles play, before going on to clinch the point behind wins in first and third doubles, respectively. The Deacs' momentum carried over into singles as they won the opening set on 4-of-6 courts.
 
After Florida evened the ledger at one with a win in third singles, Wake Forest notched wins in the fifth, fourth and sixth slots to secure its spot in the championship match of the North Carolina Regional.
 
How It Happened
  • The Demon Deacons got off to an excellent start in doubles play, leading 3-1 in first and third doubles.
  • After facing a 3-1 deficit, Matthew Thomson/Filippo Moroni battled back to take a 5-4 lead in second doubles.
  • No. 18 DK Suresh Ekambaram/Holden Koons became the first pairing to take a doubles contest as they earned a 6-2 win on court one.
  • Minutes later, Luciano Tacchi/Luca Pow knocked off Nate Bonetto/JanMagnus Johnson, 6-3 in third doubles to clinch the point for Wake Forest.
  • The Demon Deacons held a 1-0 lead, going into singles play.
  • Head coach Tony Bresky made a slight adjustment to the singles lineup from the Demon Deacons' previous match.
  • Wake Forest got off to a strong start in singles action, taking set one on 4-of-6 courts.
  • Florida evened the ledger at one apiece after winning third singles.
  • Minutes later, Luciano Tacchi and Holden Koons took fourth and fifth singles, simultaneously, giving the Deacs a 3-1 lead.
    • Tacchi defeated Nate Bonetto (6-4, 7-5).
    • Koons knocked off No. 69 Tanapatt Nirundorn (6-3, 6-2).
      • The win marked Koons' first ranked victory of the 2024 campaign.
  • Freshman Luca Pow then secured the win for Wake Forest, earning an electric 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 86 JanMangus Johnson on court six.
    • The win marked Pow's first-career dual singles win over a ranked foe.
  • No. 17 Wake Forest defeated No. 20 Florida, 4-1, to advance to the championship of the North Carolina Regional.
