Demon Deacons Drop Heartbreaker to Stanford

10/25/2024 10:42:00 PM | Field Hockey

Wake Forest closes the road portion of the regular season at California on Sunday.

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Despite holding Stanford to just two shot attempts in the second half and six overall on the night, the Wake Forest field hockey team fell, 1-0, on Friday at Varsity Field Hockey Turf.

The Demon Deacon (6-9, 1-5 ACC) backline was strong all evening, holding the Cardinal (7-8, 1-6 ACC) to just three shots on goal and one penalty corner.

Offensively, Wake Forest dominated the shot category by a 16-6 margin, including nine shots on goal. The Demon Deacons generated 12 penalty corners, with 10 coming in the final 30 minutes of action.

Freshman Lena Keller led the Deacs with four shots on cage and five overall for a new career-high in both categories.

How It Happened
  • Junior goalie Ellie Todd recorded her save of the night seven minutes into the contest to keep the match level in the early stages.
  • Wake Forest earned the first penalty corner of the match with five minutes remaining in the period with senior Ashley Hart having her shot attempt blocked by the Cardinal defense.
  • The Deacs nearly struck for the match's first goal, forcing the Stanford goalie into a save off a second penalty corner with an attempt on cage from sophomore Faye Janse
  • Stanford generated their first penalty corner of the evening with 5:58 left in the second quarter but a pair of Cardinal attempts were sent away by the Wake defense.
  • Forward Ana Franco sent a shot just high of the cage almost giving the Deacs the lead on their fourth shot attempt of the match with just over seven minutes left in the first half.
  • The Deacs earned their third penalty corner of the night with 7:11 left in the third quarter off a nice play in the circle from Hart.
    • Sophomore Mia Schoenbeck forced the Cardinal keeper into her second save as the Deacs looked to break the deadlock.
  • Wake Forest threatened again moments later, but another save on a shot by graduate transfer Anabelle Brodeur kept the match scoreless.
  • The strong offensive threat continued with two more penalty corners for the Demon Deacons with under five minutes left in the period.
    • Schoenbeck nearly broke through with an attempt off the post and freshman Lena Keller had her shot turned away at the last second to keep the match knotted at 0-0.
  • The Deacs found the back of the cage twice on a pair of penalty corners, but both attempts were waved off by the referees.
  • Wake came out of the half on the front foot, putting together seven shots and six penalty corners in the third quarter, as the match remained scoreless after 45 minutes of action.
  • Continuing to push for the go-ahead goal, Wake Forest created their ninth and 10th penalty corners of the night early in the fourth quarter.
    • Keller put shots on cage on both attempts but two more saves from the Stanford goalkeeper kept the match scoreless.
  • Stanford took a 1-0 lead on their first shot attempt of the second half with less than eight minutes remaining.
  • After a review went against Wake, the Demon Deacons threatened again in the final 18 seconds, but the last-ditch effort went just right of the cage as Stanford escaped with a 1-0 win.
