The winning goal marked the second overtime winner this season for sophomore Faye Janse.
BERKELEY, Calif. – Battling for over 70 minutes, the Wake Forest field hockey team triumphed, 3-2, over the California Golden Bears in double overtime on Sunday afternoon.
Offensively the Demon Deacons (7-9, 2-5 ACC) finished with 22 shots, marking the third time this season Wake Forest has finished with 20 or more shots in a match. This also marked the most shots the Demon Deacons have recorded in an ACC match this season and the most since at least the 2012 season.
With the help of the game-winner from sophomore Faye Janse in the second overtime, the Deacs have now secured their spot in postseason play, qualifying for the ACC Tournament. The Demon Deacons will have home field advantage for the ACC Tournament as it will be hosted at historic Kentner Field from Nov. 5-8.
The Wake Forest back line was strong once again, holding California (7-8, 1-6 ACC) to just four shots on goal and one goal coming in the run of play.
The youth of Wake Forest continues to shine as goals from sophomore Ava Moore, freshman Lauren Storey and Janse improve the mark of 59 of the Demon Deacon's 75 points coming from underclassmen this season.
Storey's 17 points as a freshman mark the most by a first-year Wake Forest student-athlete since 2016 ACC Freshman of the Year Nicola Pluta's 41 points.
Janse now has five goals on the season and 12 total points while Moore tallied her first goal of the season and third point overall.
How It Happened
"Our ability to rebound after a challenging loss on Friday night was remarkable. I'm extremely proud of not only the outcome, but the fight the players showed throughout. We created many more opportunities from the field today, contested more shots and played better as a team. It's a great win against a very talented Cal squad." - head coach Jen Averill
