Deacs to Open November at Home Versus Boston College and Syracuse

Ten conference matches remain on Wake Forest volleyball’s schedule.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The final month of the regular season has arrived for Wake Forest volleyball, as the team is back home in Varsity Arena this weekend for the first time in over two weeks. Friday evening (Nov. 1) will see the Demon Deacons welcome Boston College in for a 7 p.m. ET matchup. On Sunday afternoon (Nov. 3), the Syracuse Orange comes to town and first serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.

Sunday's match will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra. Fans can follow Friday's contest via live stats.

The Deacs split matches on the road a week ago, visiting Clemson (Oct. 25) and Georgia Tech (Oct. 27) while earning a four-set win over the former. Through the first half of its Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) slate, Wake Forest is 4-6 versus league opponents and holds a 12-9 overall record.

Fan Information and Weekend Promotions
There will continue to be free admission for general admission seating for all home volleyball single matches. The team plays each home contest in Varsity Arena, located on the second level of Reynolds Gymnasium (21 Wingate Rd, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27109).

Wake Forest Athletics is committed to providing the Best Fan Experience in North Carolina within a safe and fan-friendly environment. 'Faculty & Staff Appreciation Night' headlines Friday's contest, as Wake Forest players will nominate university faculty and staff members who have enhanced their experience on campus. The members will be recognized between sets two and three during the match. For Sunday, the program will partner with the Alzheimer's Association for an awareness-focused match. Additionally, fans can enter a raffle to win two season tickets for the 2024-25 Demon Deacons men's basketball campaign.

Last Time Out
Friday, Oct. 25 – Wake Forest 3, Clemson 1
Taking the floor for its 20th showing of the fall, Wake Forest matched up with Clemson last Friday evening in a third-straight road test. The Deacs impressively bounced back from a first-set loss to take the next three, capturing a 3-1 win over the host Tigers.

Rian Baker put up big numbers for a fifth double-double of the season – 44 assists (season high) and 15 digs (tied for a career high). Sahara Maruska also went for a double-double, her second of the year – 12 kills and 14 digs (tied for a season high).

Emma Farrell was incredibly active on the floor to lead the Deacon defense, totaling 25 digs. The performance featured her highest dig total in an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) contest in fall 2024. She also added six assists.

Paige Crawford played with well-rounded versatility throughout the night, posting a line of 17 kills (match high), nine digs and three service aces. Dior Charles had 10 kills and impressed defensively as well to end with a team-high five blocks.

Making a return to the floor, Olivia Franke went 9-of-14 on her attacks with two errors (.500). 

Wake Forest has now won each of its last four meetings versus the Tigers.

Sunday, Oct. 27 – No. 17 Georgia Tech 3, Wake Forest 1
Wake Forest visited then-No. 17 Georgia Tech this past Sunday afternoon (Oct. 27) for its third matchup versus a nationally-ranked foe this fall. The Deacons snagged a second-set win but fell in a 3-1 finish on the Yellow Jackets' floor.

Dior Charles shined in the team's offensive attack, going for a new career high in kills (12). The sophomore middle blocker also led all individuals in blocks with five. Paige Crawford contributed 12 kills of her own, in addition to five digs.

The match included the second time this year in which Emma Farrell recorded 20-plus digs in consecutive matches (and first in conference play), finishing with 22 on the day. Jaime Santer added seven digs.

Rian Baker was close to another double-double, totaling 25 assists and eight digs, along with a pair of service aces. Becca Bellows chipped in 16 assists while Sahara Maruska tallied nine kills and six digs.

Week 10 Performances
A trio of Deacs stood out this past weekend on the road during the team's trips to Clemson (Oct. 25) and Georgia Tech (Oct. 27).

Dior Charles
  • Notched a new career high in kills (12) at then-No. 17 Georgia Tech.
  • Totaled 22 kills and 10 blocks through the weekend's two matches.
  • Has climbed her way up to now tie with Tina Grkovic as the team leader in blocks (95.0).
Emma Farrell
  • Posted 47 total digs through eight sets, good for a 5.87 digs-per-set average.
    • Collected 25 at Clemson and 22 at Georgia Tech.
      • Her total at Clemson was a personal-best mark in a conference showing this fall.
  • Has now recorded 20-plus digs on five separate occasions this season.
Rian Baker
  • Produced 69 total assists through eight sets played – good for an 8.62 assists-per-set average.
  • Went for a season-high 44 assists at Clemson while also tying her career-best total in digs (15).
  • Has led Wake Forest in assists 10 times this year and also has a team-leading five double-doubles.

Entering November…
The Deacs' quartet of individuals remain scattered within the conference's top-10 statistical columns, as Farrell has jumped ahead two spots in her area.
As a team, Wake Forest still stands fifth in the ACC in blocks (2.56/set).

In conference play only, Farrell is second among all league players in digs, holding a 4.39 per-set average.

Scouting the Opposition
Boston College is 9-13 overall with a 2-8 mark in conference play. The Eagles rank second in the league in blocks as a team, carrying a 2.95 per-set clip. Senior Julia Haggerty leads all ACC individuals in that same category, averaging 1.95 blocks per set. On the road, Boston College has gone 2-5 up to date.

Syracuse holds a 13-9 overall record and defeated Virginia Tech in five sets last Sunday (Oct. 27) for its first league victory. The Orange will visit NC State in Raleigh on Friday night (Nov. 1) before the Sunday matchup against Wake Forest. Junior middle blocker Anastasiia Nikolnikova ranks second and fifth in the ACC in hitting percentage (.415) and blocks (1.32/set), respectively.

The Deacs will pack their bags again and head to The Sunshine State for week 11 of the fall – traveling to Florida State (Nov. 8) and Miami (Nov. 10).
