Wake Forest Goes 2-0 in Sunday Non-Conference Doubleheader

The Demon Deacons will return to ACC play this weekend against Boston College and Syracuse.

GREENVILLE, S.C. - With four separate Demon Deacons recording multiple singles victories, the Wake Forest women's tennis team earned a pair of victories Sunday at Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C. 

After a 7-0 sweep over Furman (3–10, 0-0 SoCon) , the Deacs returned to the courts an hour later and took down Western Carolina (8-7, 1-0 SoCon), 6-1.

The Demon Deacons took the doubles point in both matches and have now started with the 1-0 advantage nine times this season. The senior-graduate duo of Brooke Killingsworth and Marcella Cruz have played a major role in the doubles success for the Deacs, as the pair improved to 8-4 in dual play this campaign.

With two victories in first singles Sunday, senior Casie Wooten improved to a stellar 10-3 in dual play this season, which leads the team. Additionally, she is 9-1 in her last 10 matches with the lone defeat coming against No. 3 Amelia Rajecki of NC State on Friday. She also earned a 6-4 victory against Western Carolina with fellow senior Mia Ahmad as her partner.

Freshman Sankavi Gownder also went 2-0 in singles on Sunday. She ranks second on the team with nine wins to just three losses. The Texas-native has won five of her last six matches and is now 2-0 while playing in fourth singles. Similar to Wooten, Gownder earned a doubles win (7-5) with Ahmad as her partner in second doubles against the Catamounts.

Killingsworth and sophomore Nevena Carton also went 2-0 in singles, as they improved to 6-6 and 7-5, respectively.

In the second match, sophomore Jingyi Li moved to 2-0 on the season as she defeated Western Carolina's Dasha Osadova 6-2, 6-0. Additionally, she partnered up with Carton and notched a 6-2 doubles victory.

Wake Forest is now 30-1 all-time against the Paladins and a perfect 3-0 against the Catamounts.

Match 1 vs. Furman

How It Happened

  • In doubles, Killingsworth/Cruz got off to a strong start on court one, as the duo took a 4-1 lead after dropping the first game.

    • Wooten/Ahmad were deadlocked at 3-3 and Pate/Gownder trailed, 1-4, on courts two and three, respectively.

  • Wake Forest clinched the point with Killingsworth/Cruz earning a 6-1 victory in first doubles right before Wooten/Ahmad got it done on court two, 6-4.

    • Pate/Gownder dropped third doubles, 6-1.

  • The Demon Deacons won five of the six first sets in singles play.

    • Killingsworth led 6-2

    • Cruz led 6-1

    • Carton led 6-2

    • Gownder led 6-1

    • Pate led 6-2

  • With dominant second sets, the Demon Deacons clinched the match with wins from Cruz (6-1, 6-1), Killingsworth (6-2, 6-2) and Carton (6-2, 6-1).

    • The two teams agreed to play the remainder of the matches out.

  • Wooten forced a third set in first singles with a 6-2 second-set victory.

    • Gownder and Pate also went into third sets on courts five and six, respectively.

  • Wake Forest added two more wins simultaneously as Wooten (3-6, 6-2, 6-4) and Pate (6-2, 4-6, 6-1) battled to three-set victories.

  • Gownder completed the sweep, as she earned a 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(4) victory in fifth singles.

Next Up

Following Sunday, Wake Forest will head north to close out a five-game road stretch with a pair of matches at Boston College (Friday, March 15) and Syracuse (Sunday, March 17). First serve for the clash with the Eagles is slated for 3 p.m.
