3/17/2024 5:42:00 PM | Baseball

The top part of the order shined again on Sunday as the freshman Javar Williams and graduate Adam Tellier finished a combined 7-of-12 with three runs scored and five RBIs.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Despite plating 10 runs for the second time over the course of the weekend, the No. 7 Wake Forest baseball team dropped the Sunday rubber game at No. 17 Virginia, 11-10, in Charlottesville, Va.

For the second-straight day, the top of the order shined for the Demon Deacons (13-6, 2-4 ACC) in the form of freshman Javar Williams and graduate Adam Tellier. The duo ended the afternoon a combined 7-of-12 with three runs scored and five RBIs.

In the loss to Virginia (16-4, 3-3 ACC), Tellier finished 4-for-5 (.800) with a pair of extra base hits, four RBI, a stolen base and a run scored. He hit his eighth home run of the season and second of the weekend in the first inning to put the Deacs on the scoreboard first. The Ada, Mich. native had 10 RBIs over the course of the weekend.

Tellier has now reached base in 18 of 19 games to start the season, recorded at least one hit in 14 of 19 games and recorded at least one RBI in 12 of 19 games.

Williams was key in setting the table for the top of the order all weekend long, finishing 8-of-17 (.471) at the plate. He has multiple hits in all three games and scored five runs.

On the mound, Blake Morningstar, Zach Johnston, Josh Gunther and Ben Shenosky all provided key relief innings in the middle innings, combining to give up one earned run on six hits over 5.1 innings of work.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wake Forest put up a two-spot in the top of the first to grab an early lead in the contest.
    • Freshman Javar Williams collected his sixth hit of the weekend on a hard hit ball to center to put one on with one away for graduate transfer Adam Tellier
    • On a 0-1 pitch, Tellier launched his eighth round-tripper of the year with a moon shot to left field to give the Deacs the 2-0 lead.
  • Virginia cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom half of the first.
  • The Deacs put a pair of runners on in the second but were unable to scratch anything across.
  • Freshman Haiden Leffew was able to get out of a bases loaded jam with a flyout to left to keep it 2-1 in favor of Wake Forest after two complete innings.
  • Williams delivered his seventh hit of the weekend in the third but was left stranded at third base in the top of the third.
  • The Cavaliers took a 4-2 lead in the third with three runs with two outs.
  • Wake Forest retook the lead with a three-run top of the fourth with a pair of homers.
    • Sophomore Jack Winnay immediately got one of the runs back for the Deacs with his third homer of the weekend and ninth long ball of the year with a leadoff shot to left field.
    • Catcher Tate Ballestero gave the Deacs the lead with his first home run in a Wake Forest uniform, depositing a two-run shot into the left field bleachers to grab a 5-4 lead.
  • Reliever Blake Morningstar had a huge shutdown frame for the Deacs, retiring Virginia in order in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Virginia tied the game at 5-5 off a Wake Forest miscue that would have got the Deacs out of the bottom of the fifth with the lead.
  • Wake Forest grabbed a four-run lead with a four spot in the top of the sixth.
    • A pair of walks from freshman Cam Nelson and Ballestero put two on with two outs in the top of the sixth and shortstop Marek Houston came through with an RBI single back up the middle to put the Deacs back on top, 6-5.
    • Williams continued his stellar weekend with his third hit of the ballgame to drive in Ballestero and push the lead to a pair.
    • For the second time this weekend and third time this season, Tellier ran his RBI total on the day to four with a double down the left field line to extend the lead to 9-5.
  • A pair of walks and wild pitches plated Winnay in the top of the seventh to make it 10-5 going into the stretch.
  • The Cavaliers got a run back on a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning.
  • Virginia cut the lead to just one with a three-run shot in the eighth.
  • Down to their last strike, UVA tied the game with a solo homer over the right field wall.
  • After Wake Forest was unable to score a run in the top half of the 10th, Virginia walked it off in the bottom half of extras.
    • Virginia won the game, 11-10, taking the series.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT
  • Graduate transfer Adam Tellier was huge for the Deacs in the finale, finishing 4-for-6 (.667) with a pair of extra base hits, four RBI, a stolen base and a run scored.
    • For the second time this weekend and third time this season, Tellier finished with four RBIs.
    • Tellier joins teammate Jake Reinisch (Georgetown - Mar. 5) as Deacs with four-hit games this season.
    • His eighth homer of the year in the top of the first ranks tied for second on the Deacs.
      • As a team, Wake Forest has 35 home runs so far this season and came into the weekend ranked top 25 nationally in home runs hit.
    • Tellier ended the weekend at Virginia 8-of-16 (.500) with 10 RBIs and two home runs.

    • Williams crossed the plate five times over the course of the three-game series and also collected his first double of the year.
