Wake Forest Secures 5-4 Comeback Victory in Series Opener Over No. 8 Florida State
4/19/2024 11:22:00 PM | Baseball
A two-run eighth inning for the Deacs proved to be the deciding factor in a 5-4 victory over the Seminoles.
Tied 3-3 going into the bottom of the eighth, Wake Forest was fueled by a four-pitch, bases loaded walk by freshman pinch hitter Antonio Morales before the game-winning run came courtesy a sacrifice fly by graduate transfer Adam Tellier.
Tellier paced the Deacs with a 2-for-4 effort, driving in three of Wake's five runs in the contest with a double in the third, a single back up the middle in the sixth and a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning. Junior Seaver King and graduate student Mitchell Salvino joined Tellier as Deacs with multi-hit efforts.
On the mound, junior Chase Burns went five innings with eight strikeouts and allowed just three runs. Freshman Josh Gunther added two scoreless innings in relief on 38 pitches before sophomore Zach Johnston earned his second career win and first in ACC play.
Graduate Cole Roland entered in the ninth inning and collected his first save of the season and first since Notre Dame on May 26, 2023.

FROM COACH WALTER
"It was a great win. That's what Friday night baseball in this league looks like. Arnold is as good as we've seen all year and as good as I've seen in a long time. We had to grind for everything we got against him. Seaver King had a really big day for us on both sides. Mitchell Salvino stepped up in a big situation today. Cam Nelson had good at-bats. Tellier obviously with a big sacrifice fly there late. The double play that Telly and Kurtz turned, that was a good play by both of them. Cole Roland didn't throw the ball great, but found a way to get it done and Josh Gunther was probably the difference today. It was a good team win that we needed and I'm glad we got it." - head coach Tom Walter
