4/6/2024 7:12:00 PM | Men's Golf

The Demon Deacons will be featured in a talented field of teams to complete the spring portion of the regular season.

NAPLES, Fla.- The Wake Forest men's golf team will close the regular season slate competing in the Calusa Cup starting Sunday, April 7 at the Calusa Pines Golf Club in Naples, Fla.

Five of the eight teams in the field are ranked inside the top-40 nationally, including Wake Forest, as this will be a big test for the Demon Deacons in the final regular season tournament.

The Deacs are coming off the Valspar Collegiate Invitational led by Michael Brennan and Marshall Meisel, finishing in the middle of the pack in ninth place with a final score of 858 (+6). Wake Forest finished ahead of a pair of top-10 teams in No. 6 Alabama and No. 9 Texas Tech and all of the teams ahead of the Demon Deacons on the leaderboard were ranked in the top-25.

Brennan led Wake Forest in round three and was the highest finisher on the individual leaderboard for the Deacs. The Leesburg, Va., native shot under par in the opening rounds including a low opening round score of 68 (-3), and ended the Valspar Collegiate Invitational tied for eighth and 3-under-par for the tournament.

It was the senior's second top ten finish of the spring season.

Meisel, meanwhile, led the Deacs in the opening rounds, ending the first day tied for third and carding the lowest score for the Deacs with a 66 (-5) in the second round. He ended the tournament tied for 15th place, and tallied two eagles and 12 birdies on the tournament.

Tomorrow's first round is scheduled to tee off at approximately 2:15 p.m.

The Deacs' Lineup
Michael Brennan
Brennan is ranked seventeenth in the PGA Tour University and 32nd in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. At the Highlands Invitational, Brennan claimed his seventh individual title. The Virginia native has the fourth most individual titles in Wake Forest history. At the Valspar Collegiate, Brennan shot under par in the opening rounds including a low opening round score of 68 (-3), and ended the Valspar Collegiate Invitational tied for eighth and 3-under-par for the tournament. This is Brennan's second top ten finish of the 2024 spring season. After a slow start in round one of the Louisiana Classics, senior Michael Brennan had a key stretch in round two. Brennan tallied ten birdies in the second round, five of them being consecutive on the back nine, and carded the lowest score of the day, 65 (-7). In his outing at the Wake Forest Invitational, Brennan shot two-under par during the second round, scoring his lowest round of the tournament 68 (-2). Brennan ended the Wake Forest Invitational tied for thirteenth. At the Invitational at the Ford, Michael Brennan recorded his lowest score in round one, 67 (-5), and ended tied for third. Live Stats About the Course
Calusa Cup
  • Calusa Pines Golf Club - Naples, Fla. – Par 72 - 7320 Yards
"Calusa Pines distinguishes itself from its brethren because it goes to excess, some would say; but in such a subtle way that it becomes memorable. Named among the prestigious "Top Ten Best New Private Clubs" in the United States according to Golf Digest, Calusa Pines features outstanding vistas generated by sweeping ridges that influences ten golf holes. The landforms are so soft and flowing that they blend in well enough to appear natural and unique. Combined with extensive native plant vegetation it is difficult to imagine the golf course was built, instead of simply laid out on this superb piece of land."
