No. 18 Wake Forest Opens 2024 Campaign at ACC/Big 10 Challenge

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Under the direction of head coach Jen Averill in her 33rd season, the No. 18 Wake Forest field hockey team opens the 2024 season this weekend at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge hosted by Michigan at Phyllis Ocker Field.
The Demon Deacons take on No. 6 Iowa at 3 p.m. on Friday to start the 2024 campaign, before matching up against the No. 12 Wolverines on Sunday at 2 p.m. Both matches can be streamed on Big 10 Network Plus.
Opponent/Series History
• Facing both teams a year ago during the 2023 ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Chapel Hill, the Deacs fell to the Hawkeyes, but bounced back with a 1-0 victory over Michigan.
• Wake Forest is 21-8 all-time against Michigan with an 11-13 mark against Iowa.
Wake Forest Highlights
• Head coach Jen Averill enters her 33rd season at the helm of the Wake Forest field hockey program, amassing an overall record of 419-233-3 as a Demon Deacon and an overall mark of 439-265-6 in 33 years of coaching. Averill agreed to a long-term contract extension this past summer to continue coaching Wake Forest for many years to come.
• Wake returns 16 players from the 2023 squad and welcomes eight freshmen and two transfers to the program. The returners made 211 appearances last season, seven of which appeared in all 17 matches.
• Sophomore Mia Schoenbeck was named to the Preseason All-ACC Team, announced by the league on Tuesday afternoon. In her debut season, Schoenbeck netted two goals and an assist to finish her freshman campaign with five points. She made 13 starts for the Demon Deacons, appearing in all 17 matches. The Louisville, Kentucky native was one of just two freshmen named to the NFHCA South All-Region Second Team. Schoenbeck recorded her first career goal with the game-winner at Ohio and opened the scoring against Colgate in the Deacs 4-0 win on the road. A member of Team USA at the 2024 Junior Pan American Championships, Schoenbeck helped guide her country to silver at the games, including a goal in the 32nd minute against Canada in the final game of the group stage.
• Schoenbeck was joined by teammate Ava Moore as a part of Team USA at the Junior Pan American games, while senior Brooke McCusker captained for Team Canada to round out the Wake contingency at the games.
• Freshmen Lena Keller and Mia Montag both represented Team Germany at the U21 European Championships in Barcelona.
