
Wake Forest Downs Kent State 3-1 on Sunday Afternoon

Freshman Lauren Storey added her fourth goal of the season in the win.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Firing off a season-high 28 shots, the Wake Forest field hockey team got back in the win column as the Demon Deacons (3-6, 0-2 ACC) defeated Kent State (2-7, 2-0 MAC) 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Kentner Stadium.
Despite a 1-0 deficit against the Golden Flash in the opening minutes of the second quarter, the Demon Deacons responded with three goals, with one in each the second, third and fourth quarters. In the second quarter, freshman Lena Keller logged her first collegiate goal on assists from freshman Mia Montag and sophomore Mia Schoenbeck.
Then midway through the third quarter, freshman Lauren Storey bagged her fourth goal of the season before senior Brooke McCusker added insurance on her first goal of the season.
Junior goalkeeper Ellie Todd recorded three saves on the afternoon.
How It Happened

How It Happened
- Wake Forest started quickly with a penalty corner 44 seconds into the action.
- Sophomore Ava Moore and freshman Lauren Storey both put a shot on cage to force the Flashes keeper into a pair of early saves.
- Sophomore Faye Janse made a great run in the flow of play, sending a shot just wide as the Demon Deacons stayed on the front foot.
- The Deacs peppered the cage sending three-straight shots from freshman Sarah Mudd, senior Ashley Hart and sophomore Amelia Frey with just over eight minutes left in the first quarter.
- Freshman back Mia Montag got loose in the circle and lasered a shot, but the Golden Flashes goalie made her fifth save of the opening frame to keep things scoreless.
- Wake Forest stayed on the attack with their second and third corner of the first quarter, but were unable to come away with an early goal despite nine shots.
- Janse continued her strong play with a pair of shots to get the Deacs going offensively in the second quarter.
- Kent State grabbed a 1-0 lead on their first offensive chance, taking advantage of a penalty corner 4:21 in the second frame.
- Wake Forest responded less than four minutes later off the Deacs fifth corner of the match.
- With Montag on the insert, she played a beautiful ball into sophomore Mia Schoenbeck, who laid it off to freshman Lena Keller.
- Keller fired from just left of the center of the circle into the back of the cage for the first goal of her Wake Forest career.
- Wake Forest outshot Kent State 12-3 as the two squads entered the half tied at 1-1.
- The Deacs pushed for the go-ahead goal with five shots on three corners just six minutes into the second half.
- On the ninth corner of the afternoon, Wake Forest broke the tie, and pushed ahead 2-1 off a penalty corner goal from Storey.
- Montag played the insert directly to Storey on the left side of the circle, as the Auckland, New Zealand, native sent a scorcher past the Kent State goalkeeper to put Wake Forest up 2-1 with just over five minutes left in the third quarter.
- Wake Forest's defensive line held strong as Kent State had just five shots with only one on goal through the first 45 minutes of action to preserve the lead.
- The Deacs continued to fire shots at the Kent State defense with a flurry of attempts to open the fourth quarter by Storey and sophomore Flo Tutfill to open the final quarter of play.
- Four minutes into the fourth quarter, Storey made a nice run down the right side of the circle, playing the ball into the middle and dumping a nice pass off to senior Brooke McCusker.
- McCusker took the feed from Storey and finished it off with a quick shot into the left side of the cage to extend the Demon Deacon lead to 3-1.
- Junior goalkeeper Ellie Todd made a trio of late saves in the match, as the Deacs held on for the 3-1 victory.
