Demon Deacons Fall to Georgia Tech in Friday Home Test

Patrycja Lagida paced Wake Forest volleyball in the match versus the Yellow Jackets.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest volleyball made a return to Varsity Arena on Friday night, hosting Georgia Tech in an evening tilt. The Demon Deacons (8-10, 2-5 ACC) suffered a 3-0 defeat to the Yellow Jackets (8-8, 3-4 ACC).

Junior Patrycja Lagida led the Deacs with 10 kills on a .320 hitting percentage. She also chipped in two service aces to tie the match high, along with three digs.

Graduate student Ryleigh Whitekettle posted seven kills while junior Paige Crawford and redshirt junior Sanaa Williams added six apiece.

Three Wake Forest players recorded five or more digs, led by senior Rian Baker's six. She and Becca Bellows contributed 11 and 13 assists, respectively.

How it Happened
  • In the opening set, the Deacs gained two points after allowing the first by Georgia Tech.
    • Wake followed up in taking two straight possessions.
  • The Deacs secured three of the next four possessions after a 5-5 tie.
  • A kill by Sanaa Willams tied the first at 8 all.
  • After Georgia Tech pounded a kill to go up 9-8, Sadie Poeck followed up with a middle hammer.
  • Patrycia Lagida made a kill to put the Deacs in front, 12-11.
  • Down 13-14, Wake Forest tied the game virtue of DeAndra Pierce by serve of Patrycia Lagida.
  • The Yellow Jackets were able to take the lead back, 15-14, forcing a Wake timeout.
  • Down 16-14, Sanaa Williams gave the Deacs two straight kills to even the set at 16-16.
  • Coming out of another timeout, Paige Crawford threw down a kill to put Wake within one, 18-17.
    • The senior notched another kill to keep her team close by, trailing by a single point.
  • Georgia Tech took four of the next five rallies to jump ahead, 23-19.

The Deacs will round out their home weekend on Sunday (Oct. 19) with a 1 p.m. matchup versus Clemson. The contest will feature the program's annual Pink Match, centering on breast cancer awareness, as fans are encouraged to wear pink and a pregame recognition will take place to announce this year's Tenacity Award recipient. The yearly award honors the memory of former Wake Forest head volleyball coach Heather Holmes, who led the program from 2005-12. Sunday's match will stream on ACC Network Extra.
