Wake Forest Heads North for Road Matches at Syracuse and Boston College

The Demon Deacons will travel for out-of-state matches throughout the next two weeks.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Having most recently finished off a four-match homestand, Wake Forest volleyball prepares for a two-week road tilt, beginning with road matchups at Syracuse and Boston College this weekend.

The Demon Deacons will firstly visit the Orange on Friday evening (Nov. 14) in a 6 p.m. first serve. Sunday afternoon is set to feature a 1 p.m. contest between Wake Forest and the Eagles.

Fans can watch both of the Friday and Sunday matches on ACC Network Extra.

The Deacs recently earned a home victory over Notre Dame this past Friday before facing No. 7 Louisville in front of a season-best record attendance inside Varsity Arena (837) on Sunday.

Wake Forest 3, Notre Dame 1

Wake Forest hosted Notre Dame last Friday night in its Seniors and Graduates Day match. The Deacs brought energy from the very start, making plays with great timing to ultimately earn a 3-1 victory over the Fighting Irish.

Paige Crawford enjoyed one of her best performances of the year on the hitting and serving end. The Wimberley, Texas, native posted a line of 17 kills, four service aces and five digs, in addition to a .452 hitting percentage. Her mark in aces tied for a career-best total in a single match.

Two other Deacs joined Crawford as individuals with double-digit kills – Patrycja Lagida (16) and Sadie Poeck (10). Poeck also had three blocks. Making her first start in conference play, Ivana Cvetkovic impressed with a match-high seven blocks – her most of the fall.

Ryleigh Whitekettle contributed nine kills and six blocks. Becca Bellows recorded 27 assists while Rian Baker was just short of a double-double – 15 assists and nine digs to lead all individuals.

The Deacs finished with eight aces – their most in a conference match this fall.

Sunday, Nov. 9
No. 7 Louisville 3, Wake Forest 1

The Deacs took on the No. 7 Louisville Cardinals this past Sunday afternoon, making a fourth-straight appearance on its home floor. Wake Forest gave a collective two-way effort and won the second set, but fell short in a 3-1 finish to the visitors.

Ryleigh Whitekettle led the Deacs in kills with 11. The right-side hitter posted a .364 hitting percentage while adding four blocks. Paige Crawford chipped in 10 kills and four digs.

Ivana Cvetkovic again made an impact on the defensive end, finishing with a team-high six blocks.

Emma Farrell paced the Demon Deacons' defense with a team-best 12 digs. Joining her in the back line, Dhru Lalaji added six digs and a pair of service aces.

Patrycja Lagida totaled nine kills and eight digs while Rian Baker was also close to a double-double (19 assists and eight digs). Sanaa Williams went 9-for-15 on attacks with only one error (.533).

Newest Milestone
During set two of the team's most recent showing versus No. 7 Louisville, Becca Bellows reached over 1,000 career assists. Leading the Deacs in assists this season (482), the Wheaton, Ill., native has recorded double figures in all but one of the team's 25 matches this season, including 12 showings of 20-plus assists. Bellows also has a team-leading five double-doubles on the year.

Paige and Patrcyja
A pair of Deacon hitters continue to stand out in the form of Paige Crawford and Patrycja Lagida. Crawford recently moved up to second on the roster in digs (169) and is a team kills leader for a fourth consecutive season (290). Patrycja Lagida is just behind Crawford in the kills area with 225 and has taken a step in her serving throughout ACC play – producing 15 of her 22 season service aces and ranked in the league's top 10 the last two weeks. Overall, Crawford and Lagida stand as top-five players for Wake Forest in kills, aces, digs and blocks. They are the only two Deacs to have multiple performances of 15-plus kills.

Scouting the Opposition
Syracuse is 13-11 overall and 5-9 in the conference after dropping its last five contests. The Orange have been one of the top ACC teams in digs, holding a 14.43 per-set average. A few players rank within the league's top-10 statistical categories:
  • Gabby McLaughlin – 8th in Kills (3.80/set) and 9th in Points (4.25/set)
  • Tehya Maeva – 8th in Assists (9.22/set)
  • Reese Teves – 10th in Service Aces (0.35/set)
  • Rana Yamada – 10th in Digs (3.44/set)

Boston College enters the weekend at 16-10 overall, set to host NC State on Friday evening (Nov. 14). The Eagles are 8-5 at home. Two defensive standouts are Brooklyn Yelland and Bella Ehrlich, who rank ninth and 10th in the ACC in digs and blocks, respectively. Head coach Jason Kennedy is in his ninth year leading the program.
