Demon Deacons Defeat Eagles in Sunday Road Test, Cap Off 2-0 ACC Weekend

Wake Forest’s hitters again led the pace on Sunday afternoon.

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Wake Forest volleyball (13-14, 7-9 ACC) finished its road trip on a victorious note during Sunday afternoon, defeating Boston College (16-12, 5-11 ACC) in a 3-1 decision.

With Sunday's win and a victory over Syracuse on Friday, Wake Forest earned its first 2-0 weekend within conference play this fall.

Junior Patrycja Lagida recorded her second double-double in as many matches – tallying 10 kills, 10 digs and three service aces. The Chotomow, Poland, native now has four double-doubles this fall. Senior Paige Crawford was also a standout on the hitting end, finishing with a team-best 14 kills. She also reached a new career high in blocks (6).

Senior Emma Farrell led all individuals with 18 digs. Freshman Kelis Hawkins made her presence felt at the net, totaling a match-high nine blocks. The middle blocker additionally went 5-of-7 on attacks with only one error (.571).

Senior Rian Baker was close to a double-double with 19 assists and nine digs. Fellow setter Beca Bellows contributed 23 assists. Graduate student Ryleigh Whitekettle chipped in eight kills and four blocks.

How it Happened
  • Kills by Kelis Hawkins and Patrycja Lagida opened set one for Wake.
  • Lagida then gave the Deacs a 5-3 lead with back-to-back service aces.
  • Paige Crawford was aggressive on early swings, nailing three kills to force a Boston College timeout.
    • Wake led 9-4 at the time.
  • Once action resumed, Sanaa Williams lined the team's third ace of the set.
  • The Deacs were soon successful on a challenge, staying ahead 12-5.
  • Boston College started a 5-1 push before a timeout was taken.
  • A few points were traded as a one-point game unfolded.
    • Wake was in front, 15-14.
  • Williams stayed active, and a pair of errors by the Eagles gave the Deacs an 18-15 advantage.
  • Crawford took over to help start a 4-0 boost, chipping in kills and blocks with Hawkins.
  • An Eagle attacking error put Wake at set point.
  • Whitekettle/Williams finished the first with a final block, 25-20.
    • Crawford had six kills and two blocks in the frame.
  • Set two was tightly played to start, with Boston College slightly ahead 7-5.
  • After Sadie Poeck tied the board at 8 all with a hit, the Deacs earned three more consecutive points, as the Eagles subsequently called for a timeout.
  • Three straight points were scored by Boston College before Whitekettle stopped the run.
  • Another string of three unanswered points happened by the host, taking the lead (14-13).
  • Wake's hitters made plays to get the Deacs back in front by one, highlighted by additional Crawford slams.
    • The Deacs were successful on five points in a row.
  • Whitekettle secured the second with one more kill, 25-20.
  • Boston College led 6-2 to start set three.
  • Ivana Cvetkovic soon checked in for the Deacs.
  • Whitekettle kept her squad close with two kills.
    • Lagida followed with one of her own, trimming the deficit to 7-6.
  • Seeing the Eagles go up 13-8, Wake regrouped at its bench.
  • Olivia Murphy made her first appearance in two months midway in set three.
  • Boston College upped its lead to 17-10 with four points in a row.
  • Anya Santrac and Dhru Lalaji also entered the match for Wake.
  • The Eagles were able to control their way to a 25-13 set-three victory.
    • Rian Baker sat at 16 assists and seven digs at the time.
  • Similar to the third, Boston College held a 6-2 lead early in set four.
  • After three Deacs posted a kill apiece, Lagida delivered an ace to even the margin at 6-6.
  • Taking advantage of Boston College errors, Wake stepped ahead 12-9.
  • Rian Baker made a dump kill right before the media timeout, as the Deacs were still in front (15-12).
  • Wake produced a couple of more kills while the Eagles continued to suffer a handful of errors.
    • Whitekettle and Hawkins also impressed down the stretch defensively, totaling blocks.
  • Punches by Lagida and Whitekettle closed out set four, 25-18.
  • Wake Forest defeated Boston College, 3-1.

  • Emma Farrell reached over 1,800 career digs during Sunday's match.
  • Paige Crawford has now led the team in kills 12 times this season.

"Another strong performance by our team," said head coach Jeff Hulsmeyer. "We did a very good job of controlling the first two sets and then responding the right way after the third. It was great getting different players in there to see many contributions. I am proud of the focus we showed this weekend, during our travel and preparation. We will enjoy this trip back home before turning our attention to more opportunities next week."

The Deacs will travel to their neighbor state next week, visiting Virginia Tech (Nov. 21) and Virginia (Nov. 23). Wake Forest's matchup with the Hokies on Friday is slated for a 6 p.m. start time and will stream on ACC Network Extra.
