John Hayes' Era of Impact
In his eighth season as director of Wake Forest Track & Field and Cross Country, Coach John Hayes will lead 24 Demon Deacons at the 2025 Indoor ACC Track and Field Championships.
Heading into the Championships, Hayes led the Wake Forest Cross Country squad to their first ACC Championship title since 1994—and their second in the past three years—Hayes and the Deacs secured Wake Forest Athletics' sixth title and 58th overall ACC Championship on Nov. 1, 2024.
He then guided the program to a seventh-place finish at the 2024 NCAA Championships on Nov. 23 in Madison, Wisc., coaching All-American Charlie Sprott, who finished in 32nd place with a time of 29:21.6.
Following these outstanding achievements, Hayes was honored with the 2024 Southeast Regional and ACC Cross Country Coach of the Year awards.
Since arriving in August of 2016, the Demon Deacons have captured 113 All-ACC honors, led by 2023 ACC Indoor Champion Tommy Kitchell (shot put), 2022 ACC Outdoor Champion Thomas Vanoppen (1500m), and 2021 ACC Indoor Champions Anna Bush (pentathlon) and Tony Jones (high jump).

Additionally, she also broke the Darius Dixon Meet record (which she had set in 2024) and tied Liberty University's facility record. Grace ranks No. 2 in the ACC and No. 18 nationally.
