VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. - At the 2025 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Virginia Beach, Wake Forest sophomore Rocky Hansen set a new program record in the indoor 5000 meters, claiming third place with a time of 13:12.65. Hansen's performance earned him First-Team All-American honors.
The Demon Deacons' Distance Medley Relay squad also impressed, securing Second-Team All-American honors with a ninth-place finish and a time of 9:24.13.
Competing against 15 athletes, Hansen's record-breaking run propelled him to third place nationally.
Hansen has been on a roll this season, with three top-10 finishes. These include his victory in the mile on Jan. 17 at the Virginia Tech Invitational, where he clocked 3:57.90. He also finished 10th at the BU Terrier Classic in Boston, Mass., on Feb. 1, posting a time of 13:14.43 and setting a new Wake Forest indoor record in the event.
Following Hansen's performance, Luke Tewalt, Foster Shelbert, Rynard Swanepoel, and Paul Specht took to the track for the DMR. They finished in 9:24.13, placing ninth overall.
Notable Finishes
Men's 5000m
Men's 800m
"Today these guys went to battle in one of the most competitive meets in the world after the Olympic Games and world championships. Rocky was in a tactical race and he handled it like a veteran. He closed his last 800m in 1:58.42 to finish third. What an exceptional season! The DMR competed hard. Luke got jostled pretty hard in the 1200 leg and put us near the front. Foster came off of illness well and battled tough. Rynard also bounced back after being quite sick at ACC. Paul closed it out nicely and just missed scoring. I feel incredibly fortunate to coach such a tremendous group. I can always count on these guys to fight all the way to the end. My staff has done a great job with these guys. Tomorrow Luke will come back in the 3k and I'm very optimistic about him. When Luke gets on a roll he is very dangerous. Luke's on a roll! - Director of Track & Field and Cross Country John Hayes
