The Cardinal were undefeated the entire season before today’s semifinal match.
GREENSBORO, N.C. - With outstanding underclassmen performances from freshmen Chloe Kovelesky and Sarah Lydic and a clutch final putt from sophomore Macy Pate, the Wake Forest women's golf team has advanced to the 2025 ACC Championship finals against No. 2 seed Florida State.
Prior to facing the reigning NCAA champions Stanford in the semifinals, Wake Forest battled the fifth-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels in the quarterfinals. Senior Carolina Chacarra secured the Deacs' first point of the round as she went 4&3 for the match victory. After going three up through the first nine holes of the day, Kovelesky grabbed another point for the Deacs and finished 5&4, while junior Anne-Sterre den Dunne went 1UP to win her match and send the team to the semifinals.
After the 3-0 victory against the Tar Heels, Wake Forest advanced to face the Cardinal, who received a bye during the quarterfinals. The Deacons last faced off against the West Coast squad during the 2023-24 season, in which Wake Forest defeated the Cardinal in match play 3-2 at the East Lake Cup.
Prior to Friday's semifinals, Stanford boasted an impressive 93-0-1 season record, as well as a perfect record in match play.
Competition remained neck and neck as both teams swapped points back and forth throughout the round. Freshman Sarah Lydic soon took a strong lead in her match and remained up for her entire match to finish 8&6 and put up the Deacs first point on the board.
The Cardinal notched two points of their own, but Wake Forest was quick with an answer.
Despite being three down after hole 10, Kovelesky barreled through the remaining holes and finished two up with an eagle on hole 18 to tie the match at 2-2. With the last point up for grabs, pressure rested on sophomore Macy Pate's shoulders to bring home the final point for the Deacs.
Pate was tied through holes 15 and 16 but birdied on hole 17 to put herself one up. A beautiful putt on hole 18 won her match two up and advanced the Deacons to tomorrow's championship final.
Wake Forest is now 18-2 in match play since the 2023 NCAA championship year. The Deacs begin competition at 9 a.m. ET with the broadcast available on ACCNX.
