Wake Forest takes a perfect home record into its match with the Flames.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest women's tennis (4-3) is back in action for the second time in three days, this time against the Liberty Flames (5-1) of Conference USA. Wake Forest defeated Memphis, 6-1, on Thursday evening behind a doubles win and five singles victories. The win kept the Demon Deacons undefeated at home on the season, as they improved to a perfect 4-0 in Winston-Salem. It is the team's best home start since 2018-19, when the Deacs won their first 12 home matches of the season.
First serve against Liberty is set for 12 p.m. on Saturday, February 14, on Wake Forest's outdoor courts.
Thursday was littered with standout performances from the Deacs. Kady Tannenbaum, Sankavi Gownder and Evie Oxford all were perfect on the day, each winning both their singles and doubles matches. Junior Aubrey Nisbet also had a strong day, winning her first singles match of the season in three sets.
Top-10 Class
Wake Forest has officially landed a top-10 recruiting class, coming in at No. 9 nationally according to Tennis Recruiting Network. The Deacs' class ranked third in the ACC and is one of only six classes nationwide to feature multiple blue-chip prospects. Catherine Rennard (No. 18), Lillian Santos (No. 25) and Bella Jacutin-Mariona (No. 57) are the three newcomers who make up the third-best class in school history.
Nevena Chasing 100
Senior Nevena Carton is closing in on 100 overall combined wins. She has 99 so far in her career.
Last Time Out
Wake Forest defeated Memphis, 6-1, on Thursday, February 12.
The Deacs won a thrilling doubles session to grab an early lead. Evie Oxford and Sankavi Gownder never trailed, cruising to a 6-3 win over Memphis' Natalia Koppova and Rebecca Frant. After the Tigers evened it up with a win on court two, the doubles point came down to the Nevena Carton/Kady Tannenbaum - Sofiia Mykhailets/Emma Dvorackova match on court one. After trailing 4-2 early, the Deacs' top duo came back to even the score at six to force a tiebreaker. Carton and Tannenbaum came up clutch in the tiebreaker, winning 7-5, to clinch the first point of the day and swing the momentum the way of Wake Forest.
Gownder won the first singles match of the day, making quick work of Clemence Thouard to put the Deacs up 2-0. The other singles matches were more closely contested, as Tannenbaum, Oxford, Carton, Heidi Bulger and Nisbet all took their opponents to the third and deciding set.
Tannenbaum and Bulger both battled to wins after dropping the first set, giving the Deacs a 4-0 lead and clinching the win. Oxford followed with a win of her own, tying Gownder for the most singles wins on the team this year with five.
Nisbet looked strong as she picked up her first singles victory of the season (6-3, 2-6, 6-3). She made it 6-0 in favor of Wake Forest with just one match to play. Carton would go on to lose a thrilling third-set tiebreaker to Mykhailets as the Deacs fell one point short of a sweep.
