Deacons Claim Nine First Place Finishes

WINST0N-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest women's track and field team brought home eight first place finishes at the 1999 Wake Forest Invitational at Kentner Stadium on Saturday. The meet consisted of five teams, four of which are in-state schools: Wake Forest, UNC Asheville, UNC Greensboro and Davidson. Radford was the fifth school to compete in the meet.
The Deacons claimed the top six finishes in the 800m run with Jill Synder edging teammate Alsion Anibaldi by .60 seconds. Synder won the race with a mark of 2:09.30. It was Snyder's second best time of the season.
Brooke Chapman ran a season best and team best time in the 400m with a mark of 56.90 en route to a first place finish. Her previous best was also a first place finish at UNC Charlotte.
Janelle Kraus competed in the 1,500m for the first time this season and won easily. Her time of 4:29.20 was 16 seconds better than second place finisher Smyth Bitter of Davidson.
Claiming field event victories for Wake were: Rebecca Maier, discus; Sandra Jenkins, shot put; Summer Shaw, pole vault and Cynthia Kelley in the high jump. Trista Hopkins also won the 400m hurdles for the Deacs. The women's 4x400 relay team ran their worst time of the season, 3:57.50, and still managed to finish well ahead of the competition.
Wake Forest will next compete in the ACC Championships on April 16-17. This year's championships are being conducted in Clemson, SC.
