Winston-Salem, N.C. - The fourth-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team scored six goals, including four in the first half, in an 6-0 shutout victory over Appalachian State at Kentner Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The game marked the final regular season appearance at Kentner Stadium for three Deacon seniors. Forward Jenny Everett, goalkeeper Jaime Tressler and forward Erin Mooney were each honored before the game for their accomplishments on the field for the past four seasons.

Junior forward Jennie Shelton started the Deacon onslaught of scoring in the first half, taking a pass from freshman Kelly Doton and knocking it into the back of the goal for a 1-0 Wake Forest advantage. Junior Carrie Neidhardt added another goal - an unassisted shot - less than three minutes later at the 22:50 mark. Doton contributed a goal of her own to put the Deacs up 3-0 with 21:30 remaining in the half. Everett tipped the ball to Doton, who slid it past Appalachian State goalie Malia Swieconek. Mooney scored her first goal of the season - and the last Deacon goal of the first half - with three and a half minutes remaining in the half. It marked the fourth goal of her career.

Wake opened the second half much like it ended the first, scoring two goals in the first four minutes of the half. Junior forward Jemima Cameron stuck the ball into the cage at the 33:14 mark for a 5-0 Deacon lead. Shelton scored her second goal of the game at the 31:51 mark on a breakaway from the 30-yard line. The Deacon defense held the Mountaineers off in the remaining 30 minutes for the 6-0 victory.

"Our emphasis was on possession today and I think our kids did a good job of that," head coach Jen Averill said. "We could have converted some of our 50 shots to goals, but overall it was a good game for us. We did what we needed to do - keeping it a simple possession game. We're excited about our opportunity tomorrow to play James Madison."

The Deacs out shot Appalachian State 50-4. Everett led Wake with 11 shots on goal. Swieconek contributed 39 saves for the Mountaineers, while Tressler and freshman Katie Ridd combined for four Wake Forest saves.

Wake Forest improves to 15-2 overall, while Appalachian State drops to 6-12. The Deacons wrap up the regular season October 29 at James Madison. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
