Winston-Salem, N.C. - The top-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team won their seventh straight game this afternoon, defeating the eighth-ranked Virginia Cavaliers, 3-0. With the win, the Deacons upped their record to 10-3 (2-1 ACC), while the Cavaliers fell to 10-5 (1-2 ACC). The shutout was Wake Forest's second in as many games, after beating Appalachian State 6-0 on Wednesday.

The Demon Deacons got on the board first at 25:17 of the first half when freshman forward Kelly Dostal found a rebound and hammered it into the back of the goal. Less than two minutes later, Dostal struck again, this time taking a feed from senior Jennie Shelton, putting it past UVA goalkeeper Emily White. The score remained 2-0 as the teams broke for halftime.

Neither team was able to get much momentum going early in the second half. The tide continued to shift back and forth until the 12:09 mark when sophomore forward Kelly Doton took a pass from Shelton and slipped into the corner of the net to put the Deacons on top 3-0. Virginia tried to answer, but the Deacon defense held strong and Wake was able to preserve the shutout. Deacon sophomore goalkeeper Katie Ridd made 12 saves in the win, while White posted 13.

"It was a great win for us," said Wake Forest head coach Jennifer Averill. "Later in the season opponents get tougher, but we were able to work through some difficulties and get a win."

The number-one Demon Deacons will be back in action on Thursday, October 25 when they welcome Davidson to Kentner Stadium. Game time is 7 p.m.
