EUGENE, Ore. - The two Wake Forest representatives at the 2001 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships completed competition Thursday at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field. Junior J.T. Kuretich placed 17th in the Decathlon and senior Sara Day was the runner-up in the women's 10,000-Meter Run.
Day, a senior long distance runner from Winston-Salem, NC, earned All-America honors in the women's 10,000-Meter by taking second place with a time of 34:06.53. She adds the All-America accolade to the two she received earlier this spring in the Distance Medley Relay and the 3,000-Meter Run at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Amy Yoder-Begley, a senior at Arkansas, won the race with a time of 33:59.96.
"She ran a great race," said Wake Forest women's track & field head coach Annie Schweitzer Bennett. "She was very courageous and showed incredible maturity. Her and a girl from Arkansas made a big break from the group with about 5K to go and ran shoulder-to-shoulder until the last three laps. Sara did everything she could and we're real proud of her."
Kuretich, a junior decathlete from North Versailles, PA, totaled 3540 points to finish 17th in the Decathlon. Suffering an injury, Kuretich had to pull out of the competition after the first five events.
