Winston-Salem, NC - The Wake Forest field hockey team defeated James Madison by a score of 3-1 to notch a victory in its first home game of the year at Wake's Kentner Stadium. Wake Forest head coach Jennifer Averill earned her 100th victory in that capacity, running her record with the Deacs to 100-77-3. Demon Deacon senior forward Jennie Shelton led the charge with two goals and junior Marlena Reese also tallied to give the Deacs the come-from-behind-victory. "We didn't play our style today," said JMU head coach Irene Horvat. "You can certainly give partial credit for that to wake because they put great pressure on us, but if you execute those things that are within your control, it shouldn't matter who the opponent is. Our skills just weren't there today." The Dukes got on the board first as junior forward Carrie Phillips rattled one into the back of the net off a feed from Veerle Goudsward with 20:29 to play in the first half, but the Deacons took over from there as Shelton scored unassisted with just under fifteen minutes left in the half. As time wound down in the half, Shelton struck again, this time taking a feed from Jemima Cameron and scoring to put he Deacons on top for good. Reese added the insurance goal with 7:59 left in the game to ice it for Wake Forest. "Our combination play was great," Averill said. "The midfielders did a great job stepping up and limiting opposing possessions and attacks. Our forwards created some great scoring opportunities and it made for some great hockey." The Deacons upped their record to 2-1, while JMU fell to 1-2. Wake Forest will next be in action on Saturday as they will travel to Norfolk, VA to face defending national champion Old Dominion. The Deacs will look to avenge their season-ending loss in last year's NCAA semifinals.
