WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Wake Forest men's tennis team was defeated 5-0 at home Wednesday afternoon by No. 24 South Carolina. The Gamecocks took a very close doubles point from the 22nd-ranked Demon Deacons and then ran away with the win in singles play.
David Loewenthal and Trent Brendon, beat South Carolina's doubles team of Marcus Westmas and Angelo Niculescu 8-6 in the No. 1 doubles match. Wake Forest's David Bere and Justin Kaufmann lost 8-6 in the No. 3 doubles match to South Carolina's David Nelson and Ben Atkinson. After playing to a 8-8 tie in the No. 2 doubles match, Seth Rose and Carl Wermee fought past Wake Forest's Mike Murray and Derrick Spice 16-14 in the tiebreaker, giving the Gamecocks a 1-0 advantage going into singles play.
Loewenthal and Spice both lost in straight sets, as 55th-ranked Rose took out 41st-ranked Loewenthal 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles match and 90th-ranked Westman beat Spice 7-5, 6-3 in the No. 3 singles match. Bere and Murray both jumped out to 4-0 leads before losing. 75th-ranked Niculescu came back to beat Bere 7-6 (2), 6-4 in the No. 2 singles match and Nelson came back to hand Murray a 7-6 (5), 6-2 defeat at No. 4 singles.
Wake Forest falls to 15-4 with the loss and South Carolina improves to 14-6 with the win. The Demon Deacons return to action on Sunday, April 14, when they close out the regular season with NC State following the women's noon match at Leighton Stadium.
