Winston-Salem, NC - The Wake Forest men's tennis team closed up the regular season with a 7-0 victory over NC State Sunday afternoon, giving the 22nd-ranked Demon Deacons their 16th overall win and sixth ACC victory. Their six conference wins ties the school record, which has only been accomplished one other time - by the 1981 Deacon squad. Wake's 16 wins are the most victories accumulated since 1986.

The Demon Deacons swept the doubles point, winning all three matches easily. David Bere and Justin Kaufmann made quick work of NC State's Jon Davis and Bryce McCrory in the No. 2 doubles match, winning 8-2. Wake Forest's Mike Murray and Derrick Spice beat Matt Lucas and R.J. Murray 8-3 in the No. 1 match to secure the team point and then Trent Brendon teamed up with Rick Phillipp in the No. 3 match to outplay NC State's Brian Rosenthal and Ryan Boward 8-3.

Justin Kaufmann handed Davis a 7-5, 6-4 loss in the No. 5 singles match. Spice finished off Lucas 6-3, 7-6 (4) in the No.1 singles match and Brendon fought past McCrory 7-5, 2-6, 6-0 in the No. 3 match. Mike Murray came back from behind to beat his younger brother R.J. 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 4 match and Bere battled past Boward 6-0, 5-7, 6-1 in the No. 2 match. Andrew Simpson put on the finishing touches for Wake Forest with a 6-7 (5), 6-0 (10-8) win over Shane Sealy in the No. 6 match.

Wake Forest concludes the regular season 16-4 and 6-2 in the ACC and NC State finishes 5-19 and 0-8. The Demon Deacons return to action next weekend when they travel to Raleigh, NC for the ACC Championships April 18-21 at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center. Wake earns the three seed and will play the sixth-seeded Clemson in Friday's 3:00 p.m. quarterfinal. The complete and official brackets for the ACC Men's and Women's Tennis Championships will be released Monday afternoon, April 15.
