Winston-Salem, NC - The top-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team defeated the #20 Virginia Cavaliers, 5-1, on a rainy Sunday afternoon in Kentner Stadium. The Deacs secured a regular season ACC Championship title.

Wake improves to 14-1 for the season, 4-0 in the ACC. The Cavaliers fall to 9-8 for the year, 0-3 in the ACC.

Head Coach Jennifer Averill commented, "Our girls have played so well all season. It's really phenomenal to be 4-0 in this conference and win the regular season title. But we still have games to play in the tournament. We're eager to win that trophy again."

Kelly Dostal scored twice in the first half to lead the Deacs to a 2-1 lead at the break. Dostal's first goal came off of a penalty corner from freshman Lauren Crandall, with an assist from Maeke Boreel, just 13:18 into the match. Crandall passed to Dostal for the Deacs second goal of the half.

Virginia's Lindsey Selfridge scored for the Cavaliers on an assist from Katie Nicholson at 16:09 in the match. The goal was Selfridge's first as a Cavalier.

The Deacs jumped ahead 4-1 in the opening minutes of the second half, with goals from Dostal and Boreel at 40:00 and 40:43 in the game. Wood tallied her second assist of the season on Dostal's third goal of the day.

Boreel scored her second unassisted goal of the game with just 9:31 left in the game. The two goals were Boreel's fourth and fifth of the season.

Dostal's three goals in Sunday's contest bring her season total to 19, putting her in the Wake Forest record books. She ranks third on the single season goals list.

"I think we started out a little slower than we wanted," said Dostal. "But we picked up the pace in the second half. The win was really a team victory. I really depended on my teammates for those goals, they gave me the opportunities to score."

The Deacs outshot the Cavaliers 23-4 and had eight penalty corners to Virginia's four. Demon Deacon goalkeeper Katie Ridd had two saves, while Virginia's Logan Carr tallied eight on the day.

"We layed off a bit in the first half but really attacked in the second half," said Averill. "We redefined our goals at halftime and executed them well after the break."

The Deacs travel to Iowa City, Iowa during Halloween weekend to face Indiana on Saturday at 1:00 pm, followed by the tenth-ranked Iowa squad on Sunday at 1:00 pm. These games will wrap up the Deacs regular season play. The ACC tournament begins Thursday, November 6 in Charlottesville, Virginia.
