Winston-Salem, N.C. - The top-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team downed Virginia Commonwealth by a score of 8-0 on Saturday. The win extends the team's winning streak to 25 consecutive wins. It also marked the Demon Deacons' sixth consecutive shutout at Kentner Stadium.
The Deacons (6-0) jumped ahead early when sophomore Ariel Meyers registered her first goal of the season when she knocked in a crossing pass from Kelly Wood, 6:18 into the game.
Six minutes later, the Deacons added another goal when senior All-American Kelly Doton scored her second goal of the season as she fired a shot from 11 yards out to the top of the net giving the Deacs a 2-0 lead.
Less than two minutes later, freshman Lauren Crandall recorded her first career goal on a penalty corner set up by Lucy Shaw. Doton extended the lead to 4-0 with 17:11 into the game with her second goal, this one a laser from 13 yards away.
After halftime, the Deacons continued to push the offensive tempo. Junior Claire Laubach scored on a penalty corner just 4:43 seconds into the second half. Her third goal on the year was set up by Doton.
Two minutes later, Crandall scored her second goal of the game, this time unassisted. The Deacons extended the lead to 7-0 with 20 minutes to play when junior Kelly Dostal capitalized on a Katie Ackerman feed for her team-leading fifth goal of the season. The Deacons once again followed up a goal with another, this time when Crandall deflected in a Doton pass for her third goal of the afternoon.
For Crandall, her three goals marked the first career hat trick for the freshman. Doton finished the day with two goals and two assists. Senior goalkeeper Katie Ridd recorded her fourth shutout on the year, the 21st for her career. Ridd registered five saves on the day including a penalty stroke with just over three minutes left in the game.
"We addressed some things in practice earlier in the week," said head coach Jennifer Averill, "and I was pleased with our execution. It was great execution from the starters to the bench, the team adhered to what we wanted to do. This was a great game to lead into Michigan State."
The Deacons host seventh-ranked Michigan State on Sunday at 1 pm in Kentner Stadium on the Wake Forest campus.
