Demon Deacons Rally Past East Tennessee State, 4-3

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-- After losing two of three doubles contests to begin the match, 42nd ranked Wake Forest stormed back to win four singles matches in a row and defeat East Tennessee State, 4-3 on Friday at the Indoor Tennis Center in Winston-Salem. After winning both of their matches this week, the Demon Deacons improve to 4-3 while East Tennessee State falls to 1-2.
In doubles play, Wake Forest's Derrick Spice and Brett Ross entered Friday with a three-match winning streak, but dropped a close, 9-7 decision to Oscar Posada and Alejandro Salazar at No. 1. The Deacs ' Todd Paul and Andrew Hamar paired up at No. 2 and took an 8-6 victory over ETSU's Felix Insaurralde and Fernando Fiuri, but an 8-5 win for the Bucs at No. 3 gave them a 1-0 advantage.
On the singles side, the Demon Deacons wasted no time coming back and securing the match in their favor. Derrick Spice, Todd Paul, Brett Ross, and Joe Bates each won their match in straight sets. Spice came through with his third consecutive victory at No. 1, defeating Salazar, 6-3, 6-4. Paul put away ETSU's Diego Iglesias, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3, Ross took a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Moises Serrano at No. 4 and Bates defeated Insaurralde 7-6(4), 6-3 at No. 6. Wake Forest's Andrew Hamar and Andrew Simpson played their opponents tough, but both fell in super-tiebreakers after splitting the first two sets.
The Demon Deacons return to action Wednesday Feb. 25th when they travel to Blacksburg, Va. for a matchup with #57 Virginia Tech at 4 p.m.
