Derrick Spice And Todd Paul Receive All-ACC Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C.-- Wake Forest's Derrick Spice was named to the ACC's All-Conference men's tennis team and Todd Paul received Freshman of the Year honors, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced Thursday. Spice was one of 18 players named to this year's all-conference team while Paul joins Spice as just the second Demon Deacon ever to garner ACC Men's Tennis Freshman of the Year honors.
Spice, a junior from North Olmsted, Ohio, has filled the No. 1 singles position for Wake Forest during most of the 2004 season. He has eight wins in that slot and 16 total singles victories on the season, including five upset wins over opponents ranked higher than him. Spice also leads the Deacons with a 25-12 overall doubles record this year, including four wins in ACC play. This marks the second time Spice has received All-ACC recognition in his career. As a freshman in 2002, Spice won 36 singles matches, a new Wake Forest record, and was named ACC Freshman of the Year.
Paul, a freshman from Stamford, Connecticut, leads the Deacs with 28 singles victories this season, including a 15-5 mark in dual matches at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Paul also ranks third on the team with 17 doubles wins, five coming in conference play. The freshman lefthander put together a string of seven consecutive singles victories from February 18 to March 17, the team's longest streak of the season. Paul is just the second Wake Forest men's player ever named Freshman of the Year.
