Winston-Salem, NC - Wake Forest beat Michigan, 3-1, in the final game of the Aeropostale field hockey challenge on Sunday. Freshman Tamar Meijer scored the first two goals for the Deacons with a third from Kelly Dostal in the closing minutes of the match. The Deacons opened the 2004 season with consecutive victories against Iowa and Michigan, the same way Wake Forest began last year's campaign. "It was an exciting game," said head coach Jennifer Averill. "Michigan really put pressure on us but I think that we handled it well. We are at a growing and developmental stage right now. We didn't waste any time today and we did a better job of capitalizing on our opportunities." Wake Forest attacked early. Meijer notched her first collegiate goal to give the Deacons the 1-0 advantage at the 9:23 mark. The Deacs controlled the tempo of the game for the majority of the first half. A frustrated Eleanor Martin got a green card for Michigan in the closing minutes of the first half. But Michigan knotted the score with 4:08 left in the first, on a penalty corner goal by Jessica Blake. Adrienne Hortillosa was credited with the assist. The Deacons came out strong after the break with two penalty corners early. Wake capitalized on an opportunity with 22:07 left on the clock. Meijer scored her second career goal and the second Deacon goal of the day. It would prove to be the game-winner. Senior Claire Lawhon offered the assist. With continued penetration of the Michigan defense, the Deacons tapped in their third goal of the game to seal the victory. After seven close shots, Dostal was finally able to connect for her first goal of the season. Wake Forest held onto the lead, and Michigan continued to be denied. Deacon goalkeeper Kristina Gagliardi, in her second collegiate start, recorded five saves on the day. Green cards were also issued to the Michigan bench and Hortillosa. In earlier field hockey action, North Carolina dominated Iowa, beating the Hawkeyes 5-0. The Atlantic Coast Conference left the Aeropostale Field Hockey Challenge undefeated, with a 4-0 record. The Deacons improved to 2-0 on the season. Wake Forest faces Ohio State on September 3 at 3:30 in Kentner Stadium.
