Winston-Salem, NC - After nearly 75 minutes of action on Saturday, the Demon Deacons fell to ACC rival Duke, 4-3 at Kentner Stadium. The loss was the first for Wake Forest this season. The Deacons now hold a 5-1 overall record (0-1 ACC). Duke improves to 4-1, 1-0 in the ACC.

"This was a tough loss," said head coach Jennifer Averill. "We shuffled a lot of players to different positions and I was proud of each girls performance in their assigned role. It was a heartbreaking game, but we have to use it as an opportunity to learn and a chance to grow."

The Deacons started the scoring early, with a goal by Tamar Meijer less than two minutes into the match. Kelly Dostal passed to Meijer who chipped the ball in for her ninth goal of the season.

The competition was fierce for the next several minutes, as Duke and Wake Forest swapped penalty corners. At the 24:10 mark, sophomore Jamie Whitten halted a Blue Devil drive to regain Deacon possession. At midfield, Duke stole the ball back and Chrissie Murphy capitalized for the Blue Devils first point of the day.

With 14:45 left in the first period, sophomore Kristina Gagliardi posted two saves on sliding stops. The New Jersey native tallied eight saves on the day.

After 20 minutes of first half action, senior defender Claire Laubach stopped consecutive Duke drives. She was shaken up on a play and replaced by Haley Scott. Laubach did not return to the game.

With six minutes remaining, Wake Forest converted on their second penalty corner. Whitten injected the ball to Maeke Boreel. Boreel backed away as Kelly Dostal gunned it to Kelly Wood for her first goal of her junior season.

In ensuing action, Duke hit the net twice, both shots were declared no-goals because of foot interference. Wake Forest headed into the break with the 2-1 lead.

The second half offered the same competitive, tough play from both teams. Lauren Crandall was responsible for halting four Blue Devil drives in the second 35. On the first penalty corner of second half action, Duke's Katie Grant whiffed the injection pass. Whitten pounced on the opportunity and sent the ball out of the circle.

At the 42:02 mark, Duke's Johanna Bischof knotted the score at two.

With 21:55 left in regulation, Kristi Harshman drove downfield and found Haley Scott for Deacon goal number three. Duke called a time out when the Deacons took the 3-2 lead.

Duke had two penalty corners almost immediately after the time out, both of which were stopped by the Deacon defense. Ariel Meyers was responsible for the first stop and on another sliding save, Gagliardi kept the Deacons ahead.

Blue Devil Amy Stopford tied the game with 11:57 remaining in regulation. The Deacons stopped back-to-back Duke penalty corners to close out regulation.

In overtime action, Nicole Dudek scored the game-winning goal to lift the Blue Devils over the Deacons.

Wake Forest owned the shot advantage, with 27 shots taken to Duke's 23. Duke took 11 penalty corners to the Deacons' three.

Wake Forest drops to 5-1 this season. The Deacons host Louisville at Kentner Stadium, Sunday at 1 p.m.
