Winston-Salem, NC - Annie Bersagel set a Wake Forest indoor track record in the 3,000 meter run Saturday at the Alex Wilson Invitational. The Deacons set two NCAA provisionally qualifying times and recorded seven personal bests in South Bend, IN this weekend.
Melissa Council ran a 57.41 in the 400 meter dash, the best time by a Deacon this season. She ran a 9.25 in the 60 meter hurdles.
The women's distance medley relay team of Council, Caitlin Chrisman, Hanna Bremler and Michelle Sikes finished in fifth place, after an 11:29.81. The time was the team's season best by nine seconds.
"I feel really good about their performance and I'm very happy with the way they handled themselves as such a young group," said Deacon track and field director Annie Bennett.
Bersagel ran a personal best and Deacon record 9:20.06 in the 3,000 meter run. The record (9:23.60), previously set by Sara Day, dates back to 2001. The time earned her a second place finish and an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
Sikes, bettered her personal best by 23 seconds, running a 9:33.29 in the 3,000 meter run. The mark was a provisional qualifier and earned her an eighth place finish in the event. Chrisman, who provisionally qualified earlier this season, ran a 9:36.19 in that event, good for a ninth place finish.
Michael Bingham ran a 6.98 in the 60 m dash to finish seventh, while Willie Idlette ran a 7.17 for 12th place in that event.
Mike Loyd's 21.91 in the 200 meter dash earned him a sixth place finish. He finished seventh in the 60 meter hurdles after an 8.05 performance. Eric Seely ran a 48.28 in the 400 meter dash.
The men's 4x400 meter relay of Bingham, Idlette, Loyd and Seely finished sixth with a 3:17.56.
Brad Wharton ran a personal best 4:06.81 mile, just shy of the Wake Forest indoor record. Wharton's time was the best by a Deacon this season and the best by a Wake Forest athlete since Darryl Robinson set the mile record (4:06.68) in 1980.
Assistant track and field coach Matt Kerr, who will travel to France later in the month to represent Canada at the World Cross Country Championship, competed unattached in South Bend as part of his championship training. He ran a personal best 4:00.41 in the mile, good for a second place finish in that event.
