Winston-Salem, NC - Wake Forest track athletes competed at the Carolina Fast Times in Chapel Hill, N.C., and at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn., on Saturday. Lindsay Neuberger broke her own school record in the shot put and four other Deacons set personal bests.
Mike Hauck threw his season best and the fifth best mark in the conference in the javelin. His 181-11 throw earned him a first place finish in that event. The score was just shy of his personal record (183-01) set last season at the Virginia Tech Challenge.
Aaron Russell sprinted to a personal best in the 400 meter race. He finished with a time of 50.97, the second best time by a Deacon this season. Matt Owen also set a personal record, with his 4:03.74 in the 1,500 meter run.
Jill Ahrens tied her own school pole vault record, which she set last weekend. She reached a height of 11-05.75 again on Saturday, the ninth best vault in the conference this season.
Molly Nunn earned a 10th place finish in the 800 meter race with her 2:25.17. Not only was the time a personal record, but it was the second best mark by a Deacon this season. Molly Kennedy also offered the second best Deacon score for the season, with her personal best 83-01 in the javelin.
In action at the Tom Black Track in Knoxville, Lindsay Neuberger broke her own school record in the shot put, tossing a 50-07.25. It was good enough to be a regional qualifier, her third such mark this season in that event and it stands as the second best throw in the ACC this year.
The men's relay teams showed the most improvement this weekend. The 4x100 meter relay finished eighth with a season best performance 40.72. The team just missed the regional qualifying mark of 40.66 and ran less than a second off of the Wake Forest school record. The quartet owns the third fastest time in the conference in 2005.
The 4x400 meter relay finished 11th, but smoked their previous fast time of 3:20.30 set last weekend, by running a 3:13.95 on Saturday. The time is the fifth best in the conference this season, just a few seconds shy of a regional qualifying mark and even closer to the school record. Only one conference team has set a regional qualifier in that event this season.
Wake Forest will travel to Tallahassee, Fla., for the Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship April 21-23. The men finished seventh, the women fifth at last year's outdoor meet hosted by Chapel Hill. During the 2005 indoor season, both the men and women placed seventh at the conference meet.
