Winston-Salem, NC - The 26th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team was defeated by sixth-ranked Duke, 6-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Leighton Tennis Stadium. With the loss, the Deacons fall to 13-6 overall, 5-2 in the ACC and see their four-match winning streak end. Duke improves to 13-5 and 5-1 in the league.
Wake Forest dropped the doubles point for only the sixth time in 19 matches this season. That point has been the tell tale sign for the Deacons, though. Wake Forest is 0-6 when losing the doubles point this spring and a perfect 19-0 when earning that crucial point.
The Deacons won at number three where Brett Ross and Charles Sartor defeated Ned Samuelson and Ludovic Walter, 8-5. But Duke's nationally-ranked doubles teams defeated Wake Forest's top two teams, by the scores of 8-5 and 8-4.
In singles, the Deacons faced an uphill battle but things were off to a promising start. At number five, sophomore Mariusz Adamski eased past Kiril Dimitrov, the nation's 111th-ranked player, 6-3, 6-0. Wake Forest forced three set matches at numbers three and four. But Duke proved to be too much to handle, capturing the remaining singles matches.
In a battle of top 15 players, fourth-ranked Ludovic Walter of Duke defeated Wake Forest's Todd Paul, ranked 13th, 6-2, 7-5. At number two, 37th-ranked Jonathan Stokke defeated 94th-ranked Andrew Hamar, 6-4, 7-5. Cory Parr won the first set at number three, but 70th-ranked Peter Rodrigues rallied to win 5-7, 7-5, 6-4. At number four, Wake Forest's Brett Ross and Duke's Joey Atas were in a dogfight, but Atas prevailed 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Finally, at number six, Duke's Stephen Amritaj won in straight sets over Charles Sartor, 6-2, 6-3.
Wake Forest has a pair of key upcoming ACC matches at home. The Deacons entertain 18th-ranked Clemson on Friday afternoon at Leighton Tennis Stadium. Georgia Tech, ranked 30th, comes to Winston-Salem on Sunday at noon.
