Men Finish Eighth, Women 10th at ACC Indoor Championships

Behind strong performances from several Deacons, the Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up the final day of competition from the ACC Indoor Championships at Clemson University. The women ended the competition in 10th place with 20 team points while the men finished eighth with 47 points.
Senior Brad Wharton set a new school record in the mile run on Saturday, running a time of 4:03.61 to achieve the new Wake standard. His time was an NCAA provisionally-qualifying mark and was also good for second in the race.
Competing in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles, sophomore Brent LaRue finished fifth with a time of 8.14. The Kernersville, N.C., native was coming off a win the heptathlon stretching over the first two days of the competition.
In addition to Wharton, junior Michael Bingham also garnered All-ACC honors by virtue of his second place result in the 400-meter dash. Bingham ran a time of 47.05 while freshman Jonathan Reid ran a time of 49.34 to finish eighth.
A day after her dominating performance in winning the 5,000-meter run, senior Michelle Sikes finished second in the 3,000m. The Lakewood, Ohio, native ran a time of 9:24.46 for the all-conference result.
Also scoring for the Deacs was junior Chris Catton, who ran a personal and team-seasonal best time of 1:53.60 in the 800-meter run to finish fifth in the race.
The Wake Forest men's 4x400-meter relay team consisting of LaRue, Reid, Aaron Russell and Bingham finished fourth, running a time of 3:15.66.
The Virginia Tech women (136 points) and Florida State men (128) were the overall team conference champions.
The Deacons will continue their final push to achieve qualifying times for the 2007 NCAA Indoor Championships next weekend at several last chance qualifying meets. This year's national championships are being held March 9-10 on the campus of the University of Arkansas.
