WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., on Friday for the Carolina Classic, a one-day meet hosted by the University of North Carolina.
The Deacs are coming off a strong showing at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational last weekend in New York, N.Y., where junior Michael Bingham and senior Michelle Sikes broke school records en route to provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Bingham ran a time of 46.69 in the finals of the 400-meter dash to break teammate Eric Seely's previous indoor record of 47.43 set last season. The result was also good for the fourth fastest time in the nation this season.
Competing in her first meet of the season, Sikes ran a time of 9:15.33 in the 3,000-meter run to finish fourth and break Annie Bersagel's old record of 9:20.06. Her result was barely off the NCAA automatic qualifying time of 9:15.00 but was good for the ninth-best in the country.
In addition to Bingham and Sikes, sophomore Brent LaRue has also scored a provisional mark this season. His 5,480 points in the heptathlon from the JRF Multi-Event Invitational is tops in the ACC and also the seventh-best mark in the nation.
All three Deacs are ranked in the "Dandy Dozen" in their respective events, a power ranking of the top 12 athletes and relay squads in each NCAA event as determined by Trackwire.com.
Following the Carolina Classic, the Deacs will make their second trip of the season to Blacksburg, Va., for the Virginia Tech Challenge on Feb. 16-17.
