WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams will travel to the campus of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia this weekend for the 113th Penn Relays. The women's team is newly ranked in the Trackwire Top 25 for the first time this season, coming in at No. 22 in the nation.
Entering the weekend, Michelle Sikes is the only Deacon ranked in the "Dandy Dozen," a power ranking of the top 12 athletes and relay squads in each NCAA event as determined by Trackwire.com. The Lakewood, Ohio, native is ranked third in the nation in both the 5,000 and 10,000-meter runs. She is coming off a dominating weekend in those distance events at the ACC Championships where she won both races.
Sikes, along with Lindsay Neuberger (shot put) and Kevin Marion (long jump), were the individual Wake Forest representatives on the All-ACC team by virtue of their top-three finishes in their respective events. Neuberger also shattered the school record in the shot put by over a foot in the process.
The men's 4x100-meter relay team (Kevin Marion, Michael Bingham, Eric Seely and Jonathan Reid) as well as the men's 4x400-meter relay team (Tyler Dodds, Seely, Phillip Warsaw and Reid) also garnered All-ACC honors for their third-place results.
Wake has earned 19 regionally-qualifying marks or times so far this season and will be looking to add to that total this weekend.
Eleven individual performances from the Deacs rank in the top 50 on the national performance list. On the men's side the list includes Michael Bingham (400m, 16th, 46.25) and Marion (long jump, 49th, 24-02.50) as well as the 4x100m (32, 40.29) and 4x400m (22, 3:08.6) relay teams. For the women, Melissa Council (400m, 48th, 54.08), Sikes (1,500m, 7th, 4:19.07 / 5,000m, 4th, 15:47.48 / 10,000m, 2nd, 32:58.20), Caitlin Chrisman (5,000m, 45th, 16:41.12 / 10,000m, 32nd, 34:52.38) and Neuberger (shot put, 19th, 52-01.00) made on the list.
