RALEIGH, N.C. - Junior Alex Gove turned in a time of 1:00.73 in the women's 400-meter hurdle race to qualify for the NCAA regionals on a soggy Friday at the Raleigh Relays.
Gove bettered her time from last week at the Wake Forest Open by over a full second in the race and took seventh overall. Gove also equaled her season-best of 14.51 in the prelims of the women's 110-meter hurdles but she just missed qualifying for the finals.
Sophomore Anna Nosenko also punched her ticket to the NCAA regionals with a time of 16:45.81 in the 5,000-meter run. She finished ninth overall in the event and was followed across the line by teammates Merry Placer (17:11.53) and Marley Burns (17:37.37).
Fellow junior Jon Reid also turned in a solid time in the men's 400-meter dash, finishing tenth with a time of 47.79. Allan Lunkenheimer finished close behind in 13th at 48.43. There were a total of 100 competitors in the 400-meter race.
Junior Brent LaRue advanced to the finals of the men's 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.28 in the prelims on Friday. He is looking for his second-straight victory in the event as he took the top-spot at the Wake Forest Open last weekend.
The Wake Forest field athletes were in action this weekend at the Asics Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C.. The weather wasn't any better in South Carolina and the conditions made things difficult for all of the athletes. Despite the weather, a couple of Demon Deacons were still able to put up good marks.
Freshmen Erin Brooks and Michelle Lange each turned in second place finishes in their respective events. Brooks leapt 17-11.50 to finish second in the long jump while Lange posted a height of 10-6 in the pole vault to finish runner-up.
Fellow freshman Sarah Brobeck also took seventh in the shot put with a toss of 37-9.25. She also turned in a mark of 86-5 in the hammer throw earlier in the day.
On the men's side, junior Thomas Sensing finished 14th in the hammer throw with a mark of 136-11.
Despite the wet weather, both meets are set to continue as scheduled on Saturday.
