Vaughn Finishes First NCAA Track & Field Championships on Thursday

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Junior Caroline Vaughn finished up her first NCAA Track & Field Championship on Thursday as she ran solid prelim races in both the 100 and 400-meter hurdles but failed to advance in either one.
Vaughn opened the day with the first round of the 100-meter hurdles. She came into the event with a season-best time of 13.39 but crossed the line in an even 14.00 seconds to finish seventh in her heat. Only the top-3 from each heat moved on to the semifinals so Vaughn then had to shift her focus to the 400-meter hurdles.
Just over an hour later, she took the track again for the 400-meter hurdle race. The Alpharetta, Ga., native ran in lane one and was with the pack most of the way around but the toll of running three races in two days may have set in as she slid back down the final straight away.
Vaughn finished the race in eighth place at 59.89. The top-4 in each heat as well as the next best time moved on to the finals and fourth place in her heat clocked in at 58.20.
"I am really proud of Caroline's effort the last two days," said Wake Forest Director of Track & Field Annie Bennett. "This was her first taste of the NCAA Championships and I thought she did very well."
There are still two Deacons in action at the Championships as both senior Michael Bingham and sophomore Anna Nosenko will run Friday evening. Bingham will run in the semifinals of the men's 400-meter dash at 8:25 pm EST and Nosenko will run in the finals of the women's 5,000-meter run at 9:15 pm.
