TORONTO - Former Wake Forest men's soccer player Wells Thompson earned his first MLS championship as his Colorado Rapids took down FC Dallas 2-1 in extra time in the MLS Cup on Sunday at BMO Field in Toronto, Canada.
Thompson subbed into the game in the 89th minute and played the remainder of regulation and both extra time periods.
FC Dallas struck first in the 34th minute on a goal from David Ferreira, but Connor Casey equalized for Colorado in the 56th minute, and the teams would end regulation tied at 1-1.
In the 107th minute, the Rapids' Macoumba Kandji got past a defender at the end line and played a ball across goal that deflected off of Dallas' George John and into the net for the eventual game-winner. It was the first MLS Cup victory in Colorado Rapids history.
A four-year letterwinner at Wake Forest, Thompson finished his collegiate career with 16 goals, including 14 in his last two seasons. An ACC All-Tournament Team selection his senior year, Thompson helped the Deacs advance to the 2006 College Cup for the first time in school history.
